mountain road project with a update on the masonite spline roadbed

the mountain road that i am building is neat because i cut foam to fit in 6 inch slots and then i glued it down with foam calking. then i put the foam calking on the top and i took a knife and smoothed it out for the first layer. the road is in the second step now. the masonite spline roadbed project is going good. 5/8 inch wide and it fits just under the tracks, but now i have to figure how to do the slopes of the roadbed. No cork roadbed for my layout because its going to be all hand done.

Sounds good. Cant wait to see some pics

Hi Rob.

You can, cut some splines on a 45 degree angle and put them on the outside edge. If you can’t do this then try using a rasp or wood plane to accomplish the same thing. A pic would be nice so we can see what you’re talking about.[:)]

Here is what I ended up with after running the last few through a saw on an angle. Also if you take your time and are very methodical and patient you can take a rasp and put in a bit of super elevation on your splines. A very small level comes in handy for that.

Here is some double wide spline with some of the surrounding landscape added.

Good luck.

Hi Rob.

Another way you could do it is to put the spline in place, put foam along it for your landscape just below the top edge of the spline The ballast will then fall off the spline and on to the foam and form a shoulder off the spline. It will take a bit more ballast doing it this way.

Maybe others can offer a better solution.

Don’t forget masonite or hardboard as options.

Richard

masonite is hardboard and i am doing a masonite spline roadbed
