Hi

Has anybody built a moumtain with a water fall going into a creek and finishing up into a small pond my area is 10 metres by 2 metres or 30 feet by 6 feet,I need to install a rubber liner to retain water.I cannot see any articles in the G.R magazines,I am hoping my fellow garden railway guys or gals could help

Cheers Dennis From New Zealand.

Hi Dennis,

We’ve done articles on pond construction. Here are a few that might be helpful:

Stream and pond edging ideas, February 2012 (Miniscaping column, p. 65

Construct a basic pond, April 2002, p. 56

Building a fish pond, April 2000, p. 60

In the February 2015 issue, there’s an article about building a stream and the owner discusses creating the stream bed with liner.

Thanks Rene, I will check these out thanks.

Thanks.

Dennis: I built my water system backwards from what you describe. Your pond space is just a touch smaller than mine, 35 feet by 7 feet. My single track mainline passes through a tunnel under the waterfall and makes a 90 degree 8 foot radius turn inside the tunnel. The waterfall feeds directly into the lake (Koi pond) then to a rocky stream to the outflow box. The pond and railroad went in at the same time. DA BOSS (a.k.a. Wife) dictated the arrangement of the pond. Even though the pond is only 5 feet wide it is just over 4 feet deep. After 15+ years of operation monthly maintenance is still a two part process, rinse the outflow filters (4 minutes) and back flush the primary filter (5 minutes.)

Water Hint: While designing your lake calculate the total water volume. Now design your filter/pump system so that the total volume will pass through the filters at least every 2 hours.
Rene gave some good resources, if you have specific questions that you cannot find in the resources just drop them here or PM me here and I will do my best to answer any questions.
