What are your mountains made of?

Mine are plaster covered foam. I paint them with earth toned latex paint after installing and staining/painting the rock formations. Then I sprinke ground foam onto the wet paint. Let it all dry. Then sprikle on more ground cover to get the effect I am looking for. Spray lightly with water with detergent added and then dribble on a white glue and water mix. Most of my hills are covered with trees so not much more is needed.

For grass and plants on near vertical surfaces, between rocks etc. I paint on white glue with a small brush where I want the vegetation. Then I put some ground foam on a sheet of paper and blow it into place. After it is dry, I vacume up the excess that has not stayed in place.

You need to put the glue down first on a steep slope, and use thicker glue. But…

Take a look at real hills and mountains. Once the slope gets too steep, grass doesn’t grow there. You might get some washed-out dirt, or lots of rocks. Once it gets steep enough, even the dirt won’t stay in place in Mother Nature’s world, so all that’s left is rocks. Try some rock castings in those steep places. Or maybe build retaining walls with timbers or stone if a rock face isn’t appropriate for your layout’s “geology.”

Variety of terrain not only is fun to model, but, in the words of a club modeller I talked to last week, it makes the trains seem more like they’re “going somewhere.”

Dude you have to put a TON of grass on it use a good amount of scenice cement. Loco Man

I brush on full strength white glue, then I sprinkle some fine sand onto it, then lightly wet it with wet water. Once that dries, the sand gives the mountain some “tooth” so that the when the foam is applied, it won’t just run down the mountain. When the sand/glue dries, brush some more full strength white glue, and sprinkle on some ground foam. Again, lightly wet it. Keep adding foam until you get just the look you’re after. Make sure you use different colors of foam (real foliage is NEVER all one color).
