Moving trains - portable container

How do you move your trains from your home layout to and from either the shows or your club? I’m guessing that the original boxes can come in handy here. But what if you either do not have the original box or you’d like something bigger?

My first thought was a hard shell case. But I was thinking that these may squish the loco’s under the pressure of the foam and break off some of the fragile details.

So what do you use?

I have this and it works great.

Can you tell Mom works for a Technology Department?

If there’s major things,. like a Genesis Big Boy or Cab forward,. a friend of mine uses a silver case he got for 15 that I may get too. it doesn;t hold alot and can be hard on loose details. The inside is filled with long pieces of sqyure ended foam that can be removed and replaced as needed to make the shape you need.

I use the same brand. #19256. I picked up at my LHS for $100.00.

I just use a foam-lined box. Works fine. I can get the boxes free from work, but the foam I have to buy. I can do around 5 good-sized boxes for 20-30 bucks though.

While I don’t belong to a club, before I moved back in 2002, I purchased several of the A-Line/Proto Power West cases. They’ve held up great, and I use them for off-layout storage of my trains.

Avon boxes that your local Avon lady gets her orders in are great for storage. I use foam-core cut to fit to make spacers and by laying the cars on their sides I can get four layers of ten fifty foot cars in the box. I use the Avon boxes to transport my unit trains too.

For locomotives and my two passenger trains the Cal Zee and Empire Builder I have carry cases that have shelves in them. There are elastic straps to hold the trains in place. The cases must be kept upright though. They open like a book standing up. The cases are just over two feet long so two passenger cars fit on each shelf. The CZ is 12 cars and the EB is 15 cars. The power for the CZ fits in the case but the EB’s power has to go in a seperate case.
