MOW order

Does anyone know the right order of a MOW work train/ crew?

Perhaps if you could expand on your question you might get an answer, if there is one. By “right order” do you mean the order in which a MOW train cars might be in?

While I don’t know, I doubt if there is a real answer. A Maintenance of Way train is just that - they maintain the railroad’s right of way. There are many chores that can be done, and trains would be made up according to what was going to be done. There are specialized machines that are used for for certain work, and would not be on each train. A MOW train might be just a self propelled Burro crane and a flat car or gondola car. Rail and ballast maintaining trains have different rail cars.

[#welcome] Rufes222…to the forums!! I would imagine that car placement would depend on WHAT the MOW crew was going to do. If the task was to refurbi***he roadbed, then you would have several gons of gravel along with a crew car and the “tamping” car ( what is the name of that car???) to pack the replenished gravel into place.
If the crew was doing track repair, then you’d need a crane to lift rail sections off a flat car of rail, a flat car of concrete ties and the mechanical car that aligns and attaches the rail to the ties, besides a crew car…I would think. I’m sure that on your road, you could really put them in any order you chose!!

The last train I saw doing track mantance apperared to be an indepentdant contractor unit from the name on the units. The company that did the local short line yard in Albany GA said they traveled by trunck as they could not afford to travel by train. And last but not least the right of way clearing crew ( they had rail trucks to move the logs to a hugh saw powered by the hydraulics of the rail trucks) that I saw told me they were under contract from the midwest. From time to time I do see cars marked " for ballast service ". Generally the make up would be equipement for the job as Bob said. So you could make up any MOW that you wanted. Hope this helps. Laying down new roadbed, ties, and track, where would your tampers, ballast regulators, and such, going order of the first mow equipment you would see?

PS: How do you put a photo in your signature? I cant’ figure why I can’t get it on. [V]
