My Atlas Mp-15 wont run anymore. The sound system starts and when I apply throttle the locomotive goes dead. The wheels and track are clean and it is not a voltage issue. Any ideas?
BBC,
When you say it “goes dead”, do you mean that the sound disappears as soon as you apply the throttle? Or, the locomotive just doesn’t budge at all but the sound remains on?
My suggestion would be to reboot or reset your decoder back to factory settings. If you have an Atlas with sound, then you have a QSI sound decoder. The resetting sequence should be as followed:
- CV49 = 128
- CV50 = 256
- CV56 = 113
(Better double-check those parameters with the QSI manual that came with your locomotive. I’m doing this from memory.)
When you change those CV settings to the above numbers, your QSI decoder will reset. Remember that your decoder address will become “03” again. You’ll need to put your locomotive on the programming track and readdress it.
Hope that helps…

i also have the atlas ho mp15 with dcc and sound and had the same problem with it. when it happened i had just been cleaning the wheels with a rag and track cleaner and had picked up the loco and turned it arround to clean the other truck when the loco would no longer move although the sound was working in idle. i had to reset the locos decoder back to factory defaults with the magnetic wand that came with the loco. this resets the decoder address back to 03 so i then had to reprogram it back to it’s four digit address that i was using. there was no speed indication on the throttle when i picked it up off the rails so i think that when i put the loco back on the track reversed the polarity changed the decoder settings. the magnet worked right by following the instructions in the manual.
I have an N mp-15 that is just squealing like a stuck pig and runs horribly compared to when I first got it this spring. I suspect it needs lubrication, but I have hardly ran it since getting it. I am thinking they might be having QA problems. Peter
