MP15 on Canadian Pacific

Hi,

can me somebody say to the history of the MP15 AC or DC on the Canadian Pacific? When did they arrived? Are they second hand?

Christian!

Some were originally Milwaukee Road, while others were acquired, and sometimes disposed of, at various times second hand from several sources. The 2011 edition of Canadian Trackside Guide just released by the Bytown Railway Society provides details. Despite its title, in fact it covers the US operations of CN and CP and even has overviews of the rosters of BNSF, UP, NS and CSX. Of course every Canadian road is included with detailed current rosters of locomotives, passenger and MoW equipment, preserved equipment, industrial diesels, radio frequencies, track subdivisions (including the US components), signal indications, description of all railway and leased car reporting marks, and more. It is a incredibly useful volume to have as reference, something like 400 pages of information at a VERY affordable price.

Canadian Pacific has some MP-15 AC units that are former Soo Line units, that the Soo got from taking over the Milwaukee Road. Some have been repainted into CP red, but many are still in the “bandit” scheme (“MILWAUKEE ROAD” painted over with black, and “SOO” stencilled on the cab)…or at least some fading version of it. Most of the ones I see here in St.Paul, Minnesota look like this Athearn one:

The Milwaukee road ordered two batches of 32 MP15AC’s(total of 64) to replace older FM switchers and road switchers in the 70’s. The Soo Line inherited these with the purchase of the Milwaukee Road. At some point the first batch(the higher numbers) were returned to the leasor and were spread to the wind. The 32 the Soo/CP kept are in various paint schemes ranging from a ‘banditized’ version of the original Milw orange/black to Soo red/white, to SOO/CP red.
