MPC Hudson Reissues

It has been noted that the “It” Steam Engine of the PW era, the 773 Hudson in either it’s 1950, or 1964 issue is NOT one of the most powerful engines that Lionel made.

Fast forward to the 80’s when MPC first reissued the scale Hudson starting with the NYC 8406/783, and followed closely by the 785 in B & A livery.

I was able to buy a mint 783 at a good price, and it is a nicely detailed engine, with a tender superior to not only the 64-66 773, but even to the 1950 issue. I know that the steam chest smoke would not be a good feature in the real engine, but it makes for a nice visual on the layout.

However this engine is like moving a mountain, it seems to have only one speed, (slow), and it’s pulling power is minimal.

I have a MPC era 8600 which was the reissue of the PW 646, and this engine runs laps around the 8406/783.

Any suggestions on improving this monster ??

The 783 just doesn’t have it. turn it over check the inside of the drivers the one I got when new had two magnets rubbing on them. the gray 785 and every hudson since runs much better. but the 783 thumbs down. one other thing if your going to run it get a hand full of motor brushes. I’m a lionel kind of guy but that 783 was my biggest disappointment.
