MR Insider: On the road to NMRA 2014 Cleveland National
Poor Neil, Has he recently been to Canada? Up here we do 100 per, but it’s kilometers not miles. That converts to about 60 miles per hour!
David, Neil, great segment on the NMRA convention and train show. I just caught the train show Saturday, it was super. Curious though, why didn’t you guys take the train into Cleveland? Thanks, looking forward to more on the show.
In the intro, David said 2015 show? Must be the travel “jet lag”.
So, in doing 100mph, did the bears on the toll roads have you for dinner?
I’m surprised that Neil or David didn’t mention the Model Railroader construction article on building a model of the Berea, Ohio, station in O scale. Our sadly departed colleague Lee Vande Visse, then a Kalmbach illustrator, was the author, and the article included color drawings of the New York Central prototype as well as photos showing the station in earlier times. Look for “Building a sandstone station” in the January 1995 issue.
I enjoyed the visit to the Cleveland convention and train show, even though it did grate on my nerves to see operators leaning car cards against the cars on the Operations Road Show layout. That’s terrible operating technique. It not only clutters up the scene, it actually keeps you from getting any switching done, since the cars can’t be moved until the cards are removed. Those must have been rookie operators, but one of the more experienced helpers should have set them straight.
Thanks for doing all the walking for me. It was a good recap of the convention.
Thanks for the presentation. MR must be a great place to work and I like to see the staff interacting together. Warms me heart. My favorite part of any convention is the model contests and I relish the opportunity to speak with actual modelers. I wish more exposure of these fine examples could be made available. Finally, the winter 2013 issue (vol. 46, no.4) of the PRRT&HS journal, has a fine article about the PRR in Cleveland, and explains why the Pennsy was not a tenant of CUT. Thanks for your effort. Warm regards, Andy Chandler
Super excellent from MRR team that was fabulous to watch and unbelievable to see
I was blowing away with all the coverage Thanks again to MRR Team keep up the excellent work.
Kind Regards
Teady
Wow, what a great show, and how inspiring! I have never been to a NMRA convention, but thanks to this great MR report, I am definitely putting it on my short list!
Thanks for the great comments!
Jet lag, no. Old age, yes! In the media business, we’re usually working on issues and videos that won’t run until next year. Typically by summer, I lose track of what year it really is because I’ve already been working on several months worth of things for next year. At least I got the century right!
No train to Cleveland. That was the first thing I looked into. Amtrak offers just two choices from Chicago. One gets in at 1:45 am. The other at 5:30 am. Both too early for my sleeping habits!
We’ve got a lot more coverage coming your way, so enjoy the show!
David
Great job, entertaining video. But why didn’t you just take a train to the show? .
Interesting, but you guys ain’t Hope and Crosby. So next time a whole lot less of the “Road to Cleveland” and more of what’s going on there.
Why did you waste the first minute of the video showing us your ride to Cleveland? We all know what riding in a car is like. That minute could have been better spent showcasing more stuff from the convention.
While we’re talking about eating places, there’s another - the Pufferbelly - in Kent, Ohio - a little south east of Cleveland proper. It’s housed in an old mainline station on what I believe were tracks used by the Erie. At one time, the restaurant you folks dined in was also called the Pufferbelly and was associated with the one in Kent. Carol and I had lunch at the one in Kent on the first day of my retirement some thirteen years ago.

So many toys…. So little time ….
David, no train from WV either unless i went to Chicago first on the Cardinal but my car trip was only 5 hours…you guys did a great job at this train show, thanks for the great videos…
I made a rating error in my previous post. I should have given the video four stars because the coverage of the convention was really very good.
Maybe David and Neil ought to try using Amtrak sometime.
David, the video portion of downtown Cleveland brought back a flood of memories as a child growing up outside of Cleveland. As a family we came to the downtown area quite often, especially during the Christmas season to visit Samta at Higbee’s and to gaze into their beautifully decorated windows. I remember Terminal Tower vividly and the times we road the Cleveland Rapid Trainsit where my grandfather Johnston was a motorman until his retirement in the fall of 1959. I certainly wish I was there, but thank you ever so much for highlighting some of the beautiful Cleveland I remembered as a child!
