MR Mag Question

I remember reading a few years ago about a project where someone scratch built the end of track bumping post out of left over rail. Does anyone remember the issue or have any info on how to do it? Joe A.

Enter search term “bumper”

54 articles from various magazines on bumpers.

Limit it to Model Railroader. 6 entries. The one you want is probably:

Let’s build a bumping post
Model Railroader, March 2005 page 70
a simple soldering project
( BUMPER, “SMITH, DOUGLAS S.”, SOLDER, TRACK, MR )

Back issues of Model Railroader can be ordered here:

Ebay can be an excellent source of cheap used MRR. I found this particular issue by searching “Model Railroader March 2005” for 1.99 + 3.00 shipping. Your mileage may vary

I don’t know the article in question but you can probably get a general idea of how to do it with rail rather than structural steel from this prototype photo

which I found on this website (which has many interesting train pictures of the Ontario Northland).

Tomar makes one in RTR form. Part number 81-808 for code 100, 81-80883 for code 83 and 81-80870 for code 70. Since this bumper is all metal one rail needs to have an insulator to avoid a short circuit. These bumpers are excellent with just some paint needed to finish them up.

Hmm, sounds like a project is coming up for my layout [swg]

Thanks for the tip. The issue was march 2005. Joe A.

Luckly for me I save everything. I have been saving all my MR mag’s since I started in 2002. But I have checked on Ebay before when I needed an older issue. Thanks Joe A.

Yea thats what I want it to look like except out of rail. Cool web site also. Joe A.

Hi Joe A,

Send an e mail to royce.brown@tinker.af.mil and I’ll e-mail the article. I have it in PDF form along with all past MR articles. They are available on EBSCOhost, a service available to research engineers. I can legally forward these, provided its a single e-mailing.

Thanks,

Royce

Maybe this is a little off topic but I always like to approach a situation with more than one solution or option. In this case two end of tracks I have built earth mounds on the ends opposite them coming off the turntable, here is a photo of one of them:

And it is based on this CAD drawing from Norfolk Southern files on building and track maintenance:

Never thought of painting them gold but that would make this little detail really standout. Without a lot of work, it seems like it would be fairly easy to recreate the distressed paint look in this photo.

I was going to build some like that till I saw these.

Hardly worth making when you can buy realistic looking ones for 65 cents/each and you don’t have to insulate the track.
