MR Museum search

A while ago - within the last couple of years - MR Magazine did a small article about a museum/tourist place with a huge indoor layout. I thought it was in Ohio or thereabouts [at least northeast US staes near the Great Lakes - either Erie or Ontario] and was fascinated by the place and would like to visit.

Vacation idea [;)][8D][:)]

I know that is a little vague in description [:I] but for some reason it strikes me that the building was yellow in the photos [:D].

Anyone can help out here - I hope? Just post a reply and I will check back later. If there is a website for it, throw it on here too.

I think it is the Chicago museum of science and industry. MR just did 2 articles on it in the June and July 2003 magazines. The layout is HO and it IS HUGE!!! check it out at http://www.msichicago.org/. Also if you look around on MRs home page they have some videos of the layout in action. Have fun!!![;)]

Maybe the Rentslar (sp) Institute layout. Thats in the Erie area (I think)[?]

Has to be Northlandz in New Jersey

Northlandz
495 Highway 202 South
Flemington, NJ 08822

Check their site at:

thanks for the information - any links to where it is or info on how to find it? Webiste or anything?
It strikes me that this was in a small minimall type of builidng…?? I may have to do an exhaustive search of the back issues that I have lying around.

Thanks for the info but I did see that issue in MR. Oh but to dream>>>>
I thought I replied to this post but if not thansk for the info - I will hit that site and check it out but that is not the one I was thinking of.[:(]

that’s one beautiful layout but not the one - I don’t think - but thanks again for the info to see it.[:D]

The proper spelling is Rensselear (am I hooked on fonics or what[:I]) http://www.union.rpi.edu/railroad/ is the web site for there RR-it models Troy NY in the steam era

I tried the site - very nice. Where is Troy, NY? I’m not sure this is it either. I know this is a pain but thanks for the info. I really have to check those back issues.[:p]

East of Albany, NY.
East side of the state.

Thanks for the geography lesson - unfortunately, my knowledge of locales in the US is limited to what is around Lake Erie and Buffalo.

This isn’t what you are looking for, but if you or someone else reading this, comes through Wichita, Kansas there is a great O-scale layout titled “Kansas In Miniature” at the new Exploration Place. This huge layout is entirely scratch built of scenes and buildings in Kansas with lots of animated figures such as a carinival, children swinging on swingsets and a model of a drive-in theater that uses a real digital projection onto the tiny screen. The layout’s scenery is changed frequently so it is different year to year. At Christmas time it’s all lit up in extra lights. See http://www.exploration.org/ for details and address directions.

Oklahoma City’s Kirpatrick Center has an indoor O-scale layout, too. Probably not as big as the Kansas one and not as unique, but still fun. Also has full size Pullman car in the building and many display models. Couldn’t find official website but the zoo is right next door. See http://www.okczoo.com/ for address.

I always thought troy was in western new york

or maybe its just west of scranton pa where i am

It’s about 30 miles from the Massachusetts/Vermont/New York border. Look at a map. It is the east side of Albany on the other side of the Hudson river. From Scranton, just go a hundred miles east to the Hudson and then a hundred fifty more miles due north.

Yeah, ,I looked at the map–after I posted that-typical for me. lol-so my knowledge of geography is eclipsed only by my great spelling[:p]

Could the article be
a toy train museum in Strasburg, PA, down the street from the tourist line Strasburg RR (short line to paradise) near Lancaster PA. ?
Some states have a map of railroad museums/ historical sites in their state that you can check out. Or look for the Tourist guide that Kalmbach publishes. I usually look in MR & T or the RMC RR publications from New Jersey to see if something is in the area I want to visit. Or check out to see if you can find a different LHS to visit & ask there.

Have fun model railroading!
