MRC/Lima Alco C420 Diesel Shell Removal

I picked up an MRC/Lima Alco C420 at a swap meet a while ago and when I looked on the HO Seeker website for an exploded diagram of the MRC Lima Alco C420, I could not find one. How do I remove the shell? Do the coupler screws at each end also help to secure the shell?

If you can’t find a diagram, your best bet is to remove the couplers and see if the shell will then come off.

Cedarwoodron,

Take a look at this shot of the shell in the photo. Mouse over it so it zoom’s and becomes larger. Looks like the front and rear coupler pockets have long screws that go into the chassis and shell. So removing the couplers, like was said, is the way to go: Looks like one is broken on this shell.

Thanks, Frank and CaCole: Those two coupler screws look to be the way to go.

Remove the coupler screws and lift the body straight up. Ifv you don’t lift the body straight up, the screw bosses may bind in the holes (and break off). This is a nice runner. If it has the Mashima motor it’ll run a bit fast (faster than Atlas/Athearn locos). If it has a gold/brass motor then it’ll run equal with Atlas/Athearn. It was originally geared too fast, when Rivarossi took over production of the loco the changed to a lower rpm motor to slow it down. You may be able to order the motor from Rivarossi/Hornby.

Thanks Jay for the additional info- this will help as I plan to clean up/freshen up/relube the drive mechanism and paint the shell- it was unpainted NIB when I picked it up 2 months ago- may have been run just a little and then shelved for some reason.
