MRR Sweepstakes

I am a long time (20+ years, I can’t remember exactly) subscriber from Australia. Year after year I see the Sweepstakes, and the wondrous prizes on offer. I understand why it is impractical for me to win any of the “$x00 from the hobby shop of your choice” prizes. However, when I saw that the minor prizes this year included MR subscriptions, I thought perhaps they would be extended to overseas subscribers as well as US subscribers. Alas, [:(] it was not to be.

Is there any reason why overseas subscribers are excluded from at least these prizes? You could even have separate draws for Canadian and overseas subscribers, given they can’t win any of the other prizes.

Obviously I’ll continue to subscribe, but it wouild be nice to think I could take part in the sweepstakes in some small way.

In any event, keep up the great work. I look forward to MR hitting my mailbox each month.

I don’t know for sure, but there may well be legal reasons - either our end or yours. I’d drop Kalmbach an email and ask them.

Enjoy

Well Canadians are eligible, except in Quebec which apparently disallows these sorts of things. “Sweepstakes void in Quebec and void where prohibited.”

Plus I see the contest rules say “Canadian prize awards subject to skill test requirement.” At one time a lot of states had laws like that; you couldn’t just win a drawing there had to be some “skill” involved, so there would be one or two fairly simple questions you would have to answer or write in so many words or less why you want to win or whatever.

FWIW that may be the price of being interested in railways on the ‘other’ side of the ocean, I know when I subscribed to The Railway Magazine (UK) that it bugged me I couldn’t enter their contests or take advantage of some of their special offers, but that’s the way it goes.

Yes, there’s a reason. If memory serves me, there are countries, provinces, and even states, that have laws about prizes. If your country, province, or state, isn’t included, it’s because there’s a law that keeps us from including you.

I think all foreign countries are exclued because it would be too difficult to research all the various country-specific rules.

I collect baseball cars and on the back of most packs there is a contest entry, the common question for Canadian winners is:10 X 2 + 8 - 4 =? well that’s 24, easy!

Has anybody on here ever actually won a sweepstakes on any sort? And I don’t mean the junk that comes in the mail stating, “You’ve already won…” ! [;)]
