Uh oh.

My thoughts exactly. As I recall, the LAST big upgrade didn’t exactly go smoothly.
So, how long will we be down for this time…
Could a “Subscriber Preview” be coming as a part of the changeover?
That with a “here we go again” added to it was my thought when I opened the email “alerting” me to the new format a’comin’.
I remember the problems we had when we transfered to this format!
I am sure there will be likes and dislikes about the new format and there will be the “growing pains” to go with it. But like the phrae goes “change is inevitable, adaptation is choice”. We will adapt {or abandon the site}.
Good luck everyone!!!
Looks like I’m going to have to search for all the topics in my “Favorites” and re-link them again.[xx(] I’ve never really liked this format as much as earlier ones, so I hope the new one will be better. It would be nice if I could copy text by right-clicking again instead of having to use that copy button.
Would REALLY like to be able to download pictures directly from your hard drive…It is possible, other websites operate this way.
I hate to complain…and be deleted…but I think they need to work on the SEARCH area. I have tried searching for various things and I never seem to come up with anything that resembles my search question. I don’t know if it’s my computer being haunted or that their search engine just really sucks but it’s frustrating to get answers about Athearn Genesis F-7A units when the question was about Stewart RS-3s.
Hope this one makes it!

Mostly a matter of a lot of people not being good at searching.
I am getting seemingly reasonable hits when searching for
Stewart AND RS3
Stewart AND RS-3
“Stewart RS3”
If I search for
Stewart RS3
I get hits that contain one or more of the listed words (ie either Stewart or RS3).
If you on the search result page click on “more search options”, you will get it in even more detail - no need to learn complex (?) ideas like using AND between search terms when you want your hits to contain both search terms, or enclosing terms you want to have verbose in quote marks.
Of course - the same concept search rules (AND/OR/“literal phrase”) do apply to most other search engines as well

To paraphrase Marvin; the Paranoid Android: “I really don’t think that you are going to like this. I already know I won’t”
What Stein said. I don’t have any trouble looking up stuff here witht he search - in fact I think I posted something to that point in the DCC section the other week when someone complained they couldn;t find what they were looking for. If there’s a help for a given search engine, PLEASE read and understand the way to enter keywords to get the most relevant results - it really does matter. I see people post all th time that they’ve looked on Google for something and had no luck, but when I try the search, usful information is within the top coupel fo hits. You really do need to understand how to link keywords together to find what you want and not a load of junk which buries your desired results. Once you learn those basic you can probably get good results for 99.9% of your searches. Most search engines have additionally even more complex expressions that can really shittle your results down, but in general those aren’t needed very often. Learn the AND/OR/quoted expression rules and you’ll be well on your way - here, on Google, or just about any other search engine of choice.

What are the “AND/OR” rules? Why would using the words “Stewart RS-3” direct me to “Athearn Genesis F-7”? Maybe I don’t understand a lot of the finer points to searching but that seems asinine to me to get that for a search response.
The same thing happens when I go to the Product Reviews. I put in Stewart RS-3 and everything BUT that comes back. Why passenger cars & structures?
Never mind…it’s just too frustrating to ask.

Two words with no conjunction means any message with EITHER word in it - and it’s NOT just a subject body search. CHecl those results, bet you will find either someone NAMED Stewart, or someoen with an RS-3 in their signature or somethign similar. Searchign for “Stewart RS-3” or Stewart AND RS-3 will return only those posts which have BOTH words in proximity to each other. This is standard search engine operating procedure, there is nothign less capabale about the search engine on this forum.
ANd like Stein said, if you click the button that says Advanced Search and use that it’s guided, you don’t really have to ‘know’ the rules.
Computers are literal. They can;t figure out that you MEAN one thing when you tell it somethign that can be interpreted two ways. So the designer of the search makes a choice. Type it this way it means this, type it that way, it means that. A bunch of words with just spaces between them has been decided to mean OR by default - in other words, any or all of those words in a message will mean a hit. If you mean AND then you must type AND.
Just tried it to verify/ Putting “Stewart RS-3” in the seach box, with quotes, returns about 5 hits, from the recent thread on Stewart bodies on other locos. Typing in Stewart RS-3 withotu the quites results in FORTY-FOUR PAGES of hits, the most recent ones being the same thread followed by some threads about putting a DCC decoder in a Stewart and on to things which have nothing to do with Stewart RS-3’s. That’s the regualr search, not advanced.

Almost any format is better than the current one. From searching to signature manipuation, to easy access to “my threads”, to attachments, etc…One gets tired of asking how to do things here and I am sure some get tired of explaining the same thing over and over when half of it could easily be avoided.
There are many that do not come here for many reasons but one of the big ones is the lack of navigation features and other simple but lacking features.
I have really come to believe that what you suggest is an art. Some people can do it and other people cannot, and of course the people in the middle who have varying success. And I don’t mean so much the logic or syntactical aspects, but rather having an awareness and presence of mind to consider how words-- especially concept words-- are linked together, and that those ‘concept words’ are culled from general / popular usage, so that in addition to must be able to connect ‘concept words’, you also have to figure out / understand which words are likely to be the ones most popularly used.

Can they make the subscription pop-up go away? I mean, just go away, like forever? Or even go away for subscribers?
It’s an irritant. Not a bug, not a problem, not a shortcoming, just something every one of us would rather be without. Think hemorrhoids. Mosquitoes. Stuff like that.
MB,
I have not had the MR subscription pop-up ad come up since I installed Adblock Plus (ABP) on my computer. I literally forget that it’s there…
Tom
Here, here!!!
Heavens no…
Most likely they have found a way to get around the ad-blocking software i use with Firefox… That’s OK, Firefox will come with new and better ways of doing it![swg]
