MS Train Simulator fun

I have the Big Boy installed, and I tried it on the Marias Pass.
well…

I had a 50 car train and started it somewhere midroute, and everything was OK, till I started hitting the grades. I would run up a grade, hit the sanders and, errrngh, I stop.

You would think a Big Boy and 50 cars could make it over these grades. Nooo Way.

So I back down, and decide to double the grade. Cool. I find a passing siding and run back and get the rest of my cars.

I couple up and move on, till the next grade. Errns, no good.

So I try to double up again, half the train… errrrngh…no good…

so I cut off half the cars again and try the grade again…

Erngh, no good again.

soo now I back down, and now I make like 4 cars and try this grade again,…

Yaaaay!!!

I find another siding. I go to the previous cut of cars, and, the one siding I was trying to work wasnt on a level grade, and I couldnt hold cars on it, they kept rolling off…grrr, I had to use a short section of double main to single as a switching point.

So I go to drag my next set of cars up to my first set.

(note, this session ran thru a couple of evenings of playing)

Now I go back to my last section of cars and arrive, then suddenly…

“Session ended, ran out of fuel”

No coal.

Well, the Marias Pass is set up as a modern diesel line, theirs no coaling stations…

I dunno if MSTS has working coaling stations.

I’m going to have to set up a double header somehow on this route… sheeshe, I can;'t make it with a big boy and 50 cars with all this doubling…

Hi Din,
What is the name of that sim? I NEED experience in ops and it sounds like fun.
BB

micrsoft trains sim.

I have the big boy to and the physics are way off you can change them to your liking but it is very hard to do. the challengers pull much better.

Ben

How did you get the big boy installed on the game? I have it and would like to know.

dinwitty,

My wife and I were visiting a good friend of ours last year, and his son, Daniel, has MSTS. Daniel told me the EXACT same scenario you did and said that he couldn’t get over the pass - even after several attempts. Wonder how many others have had that problem…

Tom

My fun was trying to find it. We did, and it shipped a couple days ago. Now I’m downloading CP patches, and one takes 3H47mins!
now there’s fun…
Matthew

Should have used the Union Pacific’s 8500 hp Super Turbine[;)]

Cheers,
George

heh, I had DLed the NS Pocahontas route and the N&W engine collection
looks great.

changing consists is a bit detailed and some learning is involved.

I’m going to see if I can make a Big Boy Doubleheader, I dont have the challenger.
or maybe use the N&W 50 car Y6B train I just made, trying it on the pocahontas route now as a test. First time so I will see how it works out.

aha

got over the hump on the Marias pass with a tripleheader bigboy.

doubleheader couldnt do it.

Don’t forget you can set the individual car hand brakes by (I think) double clicking the car, until it turns red in the car coupling window.

That’s saved my butt a number of times. If setting the brakes on one car doesn’t hold it, do it to three or four and usually that works for me.

Congratulations! I would have given up and taken it with a few AC4400s or SD40s…which I have spent the last few days downloading…it still hasn’t arrived…
