Due to a power outage - according to MSNBC.
N.Y.-D.C. rail service halted
Power outage on rails said to cause commuter headaches
NEWARK, N.J. - Thousands of commuters had to find alternate travel Thursday morning when rail service between New York City and Washington, D.C., was shut down, apparently due to an Amtrak power outage.
In addition to the Amtrak trains, NJ Transit stopped all service on its heavily traveled Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines.
NJ Transit spokesman Ken Miller said the problem occurred on Amtrak equipment somewhere between Washington and New York, but it was not immediately clear where.
Calls to Amtrak were not immediately returned.
NJ Transit said some service was rerouted, but it was not clear how many trains were affected.
The outage, which occurred at 8 a.m. ET, was to the rails only, and stations themselves did not lose power.
This report will be updated as information becomes available.

10:45 CT and CNN is reporting that Amtrak is back running.
NOW - Congress may address the AMTRAK funding issue?
LOL!
I called my cousin and he SHOULD have been in that mess this morning. Found out he was in Detroit Today. As he said…I don’t like Detroit, but it’s better to be here today than in NYC when the trains are down!
Chris
I hardly find it funny.
The freight was at restricted speed and for good reason…
80 year old electric plant breaks often. I fly anyway .Amtrak is always late and should be shut down as a waste of money
I think something similar happened years ago on a stretch of the Northeast Corridor. A substation had a electro-mechanical problem. Power to the overhead catenary wires was gone for some hours.
Well, whether environmentalists like it or not, Amtrak should re-consider selling their surplus diesel Genesis locomotives and place batches of them at strategic points along the NEC for a case like this. Yes, they already have a few, but apparently a paltry number compared to what Pennsy had available 40 years back.
We’re from the government and we’re here to help you. Trust us!
Last time I rode Amtrak (about 1 1/2 months ago) got stuck behind a freight that would not get out of the way. What should have been a 3 hour trip turned into 5.
Gotta love Amtrak. LOL!

Find it in the Constitution and I’m right there with you…[;)]
Maybe next time Amtrak will buy the electrical equipment for their blocks from Tony’s like we do. [:D]
