Looking thru the pre-order listings and the AT&SF 4-6-0, #30-1425-1 appears to be identical to the loco offered in the R-T-R set #30-4157-1. But what has me somewhat confused is the price of the set is less than the individual loco, yet the set comes with all the stuff.
Any MTH gurus know if these are the same or what ???

Doug, The list price in the catalogs are the same for the engine and the set. The preorder price for the set is probably lower as dealers get a better discount on sets than they do regular items. A lot of dealers buy sets and break them up to resell. Don’t know the logic that MTH uses but that is the way they do it.
I am not sure, but the RTR set may not have a diecast tender. By far the better deal is the RTR set.
Tom,
I think you nailed it. I went to the MTH site and the loco listing specifies a DC tender whereas the set makes no such reference.
I learned somethin new.
By golly, you can teach an old dog new tricks. [D)]
Thanks Tom.
