MTH 4-8-4

I have an MTH Rail-King 4-8-4 that was running fine when I put it back up on the shelf after last Christmas. This year, it smokes and the light comes on and that’s it. It won’t move and no sound at all. My other engines run good on the same track. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Dick,

I am Sorry that I can’t help you, but maybe this thread will help both of us. I have an MTH Rail King 2-6-0 (Proto Sound 1, I believe) that does exactly the same thing.

All righty boys. Sounds like battery failure. May have to leave it on tracks and power up to 12v for 15 minutes, then see whatcha got . Swap out the rechargeable with a 9v, and see what happens. If you have sound, that’s a good thing, as the board should still be good. May be time to get to Radio Shack for a NiMh battery (8.4).

Question, do these 9 volt batteries look like the ones that go in radios i.e. two terminals on top? Does anybody know that Radio Shack part number?

George

The Radio Shack Nimh batteries were a shiney green (can’t miss them in the packaging) the last time I purchased one. You are replacing the white 9v shaped battery with an 8.4 rechargeable battery. Go ahead and get the plug-in-the-wall charger too (23-437). Need to charge the battery overnight before you install it. I would suggest running your engines at least every 3 months to keep the circuit boards “healthy”. It’s an easy fix, even more so in a steam engine tender.
