Finally, someone announces the SD70M-2 in CN for release in the new year. I’m not completely sold on the “new” MTH stuff yet but my LHS has already ordered the UP ACe units for himself, so I will be able to see first hand how they operate. Then I can make a decision on the MTH SD70M-2 in CN or wait for Genesis to come out.
Here’s the link. The top of the page still says SD70ACe but scroll down and the rest of it is all SD70M-2.
Given a choice between the MTH DCS sound to the Genesis MRC sound, my choice is to skip both and purchase the Genesis units without sound.
I don’t think the MTH units will be offered without DCS and the MRC is unacceptable to me, so it makes the Genesis units without sound the best for my money. I am thankful to Athearn for offering both versions.
To my knowledge, the only offerings that Athearn has for us in the SD70 family is: SD70M, SD70MAC, and SD75M. The SD70M-2 that MTH is offering is a different type of engine.
I don’t know first-hand the issues with DCS and I’ve read about the problems that people have with MRC sound units, so I too would like it if Athearn did offer the SD70M-2. At $250 the MTH loco is a bit out of my range, I bet that even at a discount dealer it’d still be a bit pricey.
The tooling for the SD70Ace announced by T55 along with the SD70M-2 variation is now in the works by Athearn for the Genesis line. The tooling that T55 sold to Athearn is very good and the models should be great. The test shots were displayed about six months ago at a show. No date was given by Athearn but they will be worth the wait.
We probably will use a few pages more before it is over. They sell them in O gauge that way, but I am surprised they would use the picture for the HO scale model. It reminds me of ads in the past for ??? I will let you guess.
At the very least, they should have learned their lesson from the ACe controversy. Why not just use a prototype picture or a dimensional drawing/CAD rendering?
