MTH Couplers

Does anyone notice, on some of the MTH Premier line of cars the type of couplers that they have? JIC, an example photo is on page 129 of the Volume 2 2006 catalog. On the coupler pic it shows the hidden uncoupling plate for remote uncoupling. Granted, I like this coupler and I have one boxcar that has this type. Thing is though, how would this type of coupler be uncoupled remotely? I don’t think you would be able to use the remote tracks with the electromagnet since you dont have the old tried-and-true thumbtack based coupler. Another type remote track perhaps?

Chris,

These couplers work with the same uncoupling track as the thumbtack type. The only difference is that they have to be positioned a little differently over the uncoupler.

I have a piece of MTH rolling stock with these couplers. They work very well with the Lionel 65530 Remote-Control (uncoupling) track. They operate on the same principle as the thumb-tack coupler, but use a square plate instead.

The plate appears to sit pretty low and close to the track. I find that the plate on this coupler is really pulled on by the magnet quite a bit more than the thumb-tack style. My section of track really grabs the plate and slows the car down.

Enjoy,
