I recently bought an MTH H10 consolidation steam locomotive from ebay new in box. When I put the engine on the track and powered it up, the headlight went on for about a second and then went out. I can’t get it to go back on. I can’t really tell if it burnt out or not. has anyone else had this probem?
Have you checked the headlight bulb with an ohmmeter? That’s the first step. Be careful powering the lamps from a bench supply, some of the MTH stuff uses very low voltage bulbs, in others they’re more standard 12 volt bulbs.
Have you checked to be sure the headlight is securely pushed or screwed in all the way? Shipping may loosen a headlight.
Also do you know if it is PS-1 or PS-2? I bought an older MTH steam engine at a train show in south Florida, it was an engine that I wanted, and it was PS-1. PS-1 has what looks like a 9 volt battery in the tender, it’s an 8.5 volt rechargeable battery.

There’s actually two flavors of the PS2 electronics, the 5V version and the 3V version.
