These units represent a substantial increase in detail, quality and DCC-readiness over the models offered starting many years ago by Life-Like in their Proto 2000 line. (I think they were just the second type of diesels in that line; many of the later kinds were considerably improved.) Individual modelers will have to decide whether they’re worth the much higher price as compared with the P2K models and also the Walthers Trainline models, which are less detailed but are mechanically very good (for regular DC control only).
I think that MTH, has once again giving us a great model of the finest quality. I’m very pleased with the sound of these engines. I will like to have a set or two, but I already own a set of A+B+B+B+As, and they are pk2s. I think that I will try to find sound decoders from Sound Tracks and see if they will give me a “good enough” sound to match what I hear from MTH… All I can say is for those of us who are thinking of buying a set, and are don’t have a set of pk2s, “Just Say Yes”!!!
I purchased a Union Pacific set. It arrived with a broken truck on the A unit. I returned it to the on line source and they had to send it back to MTH. When my source received a new set from MTH they tested it and found another problem. MTH gave them a fix and it still did not work plus there were problems with the couplers as well. This was my first attempt with MTH and it is my last. Two units and too many problems for me to take a chance with.
