My MTH HO SD70Ace Dcc is shorting my layout every time I place it on the track. What might be the problem, and how can I fix it?
I would do either one of 2 things. First contact MTH and see what they say. It may be a defect and the engine would need to be returned to have it fixed under warranty. That will mean your engine will not be home for a while and it will cost you some shipping.
Second remove the shell as per instructions and inspect all wiring incuding and especially the DCC plug and make sure there is nothing touching where it should not be touching. Using a good ohm meter here will also help track down the short.
I had a spectrum steamer that would short the rails DC or DCC and found that the quick plug that was in the DCC socket had too much solder on a couple of the pins and they were touching. I cut the path open and after that the engine ran fine.

If MTH builds there engines like other manufactures there axles will be two piece. If the gauge is two tight the axles can touch each other in the truck causing a dead short.
Did it just start doing it and worked fine when you first got it?

Thanks for the reply, the loco is brand new and worked fine the first few times, it’s going back to the LHS for a closer look
