MTH Locomotive Steam problem

I have a MTH steam locomotive…it has been in storage for a couple years. I set it up and had to replace the 9 volt battery. My questions, when I turn the smoke “ON” the unit works properly while it’s moving put makes this whining sound when in neutral. I don’t recall this before? Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Rick

You did not say what scale you have, but If your locomotive operates like my MTH # 1 scale Challenger, the whining sound is the smoke fan running and some smoke should be coming out like the blower is on when the locomotive is stopped. The smoke unit will then shut that off and start to chuff when the locomotive starts up in forward or reverse.

That is the way the large scale works so you might be hearing the fan running or whatever they have inside to proper the smoke upwards.

The battery has to be charged up for the locomotive to operate correctly.

Hope this helps since I cannot really hear your model is doing, but it sounds like what I hear when I run mine.

My new MTH berkshire does the same. The noise if from a fan. When the loco is running th smoke puffs in synch to the chuff sound. When you return to idle a fan kicks in to produce a steady stream of smoke.

I would not be happy with an unwanted, aprototypical whine coming from a model engine, but is it possible you are hearing the MTH version of the steam dynamo? The Tsunami turbo-generator for steam engines is very pronounced.

I wish it was a turbo generator sound, but it is the fan. It changes as soon as you select a direction and start the locomotive. The good thing is it makes the model looks fairly good like when a blower is turned on forcing the smoke into air whils stopped. There had to be some consessions and this is one. On the large scale locomotives, it is not so intense since you can be 10 feet away and still view the model details unlike the HO sized.

Thanks for all the help…I guess it’s normal…Thanks…
