If that’s an H15-44/16-44, then it has been made in 3-rail by Lionel back several years ago. Probably MTH has made one too.
Nothing personal, but these sorts of threads that are so common today, have got me thinking. In so many ways, many 3-railers want products that mimic HO trains in both variety and scale fidelity. And in many ways, the 3-rail train importers have responded in kind. 3-rail modelers have also taken after the HO and N scale guys in the ways we now build layouts, with far more attention to realism.
The one area where 3-railers fall behind the HO guys is in kitbashing and scratchbuilding. Even with the vastly improved variety of HO products available, the MR and RMC magazines are always full of articles about how to kitbash this loco into this one, or turning this car into that car. Yet I think we 3-rail guys still suffer from the collector “can’t touch that because it might be worth money later” mentality.
There’s NO way the 3-rail train importers can make the variety of products currently available in HO or N. There’s just not the same market numbers involved. Even the CEO of Atlas has publically said it takes several production runs of one single brand newly tooled 0 scale locomotive to just break even and make up for all the investment dollars that new product costs just to bring into production.
I personally feel, if you want it, make it yourself. I’ve made/kitbashed several 027-ized locomotives and several 027-ized types of cars. If I had waited for the train makers to come through for me with new, smaller, 027 kinds of products, I’d still be waiting. I love my own U-boat, GP, RS and my smaller mimiced 027 cars: spine cars, coil cars, coat porter hoppers. I believe these kinds of products would be a hit in the 027 market and could easily make money to recoup their costs. But I’m not running a model train company, so I took a clue from the HO guys and decided to do it myself
Question, please…Would you like to see these made in the “O” scale because they look good, are ‘authentic’ reproductions of the real stuff, are made with specific rail lines, are made for “HO” only or…? Just curious. Many thanks.
PS [#welcome] to the Forum.
I second that motion.

It is an Alco HH600/HH660. If they make in in three rail O, it will be my first Atlas locomotive.
