MTH Question...

Bought a MTH Railking at a trainshow yesterday, a 2-6-0 Mogul. I wasn’t going to buy it but for the price I couldn’t pass it by. Do i need to use special smoke fluid. I have Bachmann fluid which works great in my O-27s but when I put drops into the MTH loco, it doesn’t smoke as much as when I first brought it home.

Thanks again

John

I never used Bachmanns product, but I have used just about every other make of smoke fluid in my MTH locos, never had a problem.

seems to me there is 2 types of smoke units and the fluid for one type will work in both fine but the fluid for the other type ( which I believe is Williams) takes a higher temp and that could be what your problem is. it will burn out in time but think you need to get some either mth or Lionel smoke fluid i believe bachman/Williams is a thicker fluid.

I hope one of the others chime in here and make this more clear I seem to remember one is called a sluth smoke unit and thats what I think Williams has and it uses a thicker fluid.

I highly recommend using MTH smoke fluid for maximum smoke effect. Don’t use the coal scent unless you like a very strong smoke fluid smell. William smoke fluid is for a differant style of smoke generator that Bachmann uses, a sueth smoke generator.

I’ve been using JT’s Mega-Steam in MTH and Lionel locomotives, never a problem. I really don’t think the exact brand of smoke fluid is all that important, all the smoke units work the same way. Hot wire-wound resistor and fiberglass wick is in every one I’ve ever opened.

I think you need to rebuild the smoke unit. It is not hard to do, there was a link on one of the threads a while ago. You can search on youtube for it.

“Rebuilding” most smoke units consists of opening up the chamber in putting fresh wick in them. I use Tiki torch wick for mine, much cheaper than the little hanks of fiberglass Lionel and MTH sell. [(-D]

Hey everyone…

A quick update, I’ve discovered if I add 6-8 drops of fluid I get more smoke. D’oh! I learnt something today, can I go home now?
