I have an MTH B&LE SD-9 with Proto-2. Recently while adding smoke fluid, and while the locomotive was idling, the engine sounds stopped. This is the second time for this. The first time the sounds stopped while the locomotive was runnig with a 12 car consist. After the first time with no sound, I retruned the locomotive to a dealer for authorized repair. Upon return no problems. After about a year with little run time the second occurance. Total run time on the SD-9 is about 25 hours.
I tried a battery from a simialr PS-2 loco that has working sound. No sound when plugged into the SD-9. Any info on a fix other than another return to the dealer??? I’m no good with electricity. My grandson wants to know “When is the diesel going to work.” Help.
I don’t know what you’re using to control it. I got a PS2 SD-24 and run it with Lionel’s TPC 300 in conventional mode. Sometimes I read through the MTH instructions and TPC 300 instructions to see what it all will do and end up messing things up because my brain gets bogged with too much info. Inadvertantly shutting off sounds is one of them. I do the factory reset thing and everything comes back to normal.
Have you tried charging the battery with an MTH charger, it is a unit that plugs into the wall and the other wire goes directly to your PS-2 engine on the bottom side. Recommend charging the battery overnight(15 hours) for best results. Also if a PS-2 engine sits for a while(one month or longer) the battery goes low.
Sounds to me like the battery is not getting charged up before use. On MTH engines the battery is in there to keep the sound unit going, memory back-up so to speak.
