Mudslide closes NS tracks, incline railroad in Pittsburgh

NS has several major routes through Pgh, but the old Pennsy main runs into the edge of downtown then moves across the Allegheny to the north side. The south side has NS tracks and CSX tracks as well.

Welcome to the world of Puget Sound weather conditions, Pittsburg!

If the slide was on Mt Washington, the main line was not blocked, just the “Mon Line” along the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers The main line is across the rivers.

GLAD THE INCLINE IS OK. I’VE RIDDEN IT MANY TIMS OVER THE YEARS ON PAST VISITS TO PITTSBURGH. THE VIEW IS SPECTACULAR, ESP ON A CLEA NIGHT.

WISH THE ARTICLE HAD A PHOTO.

Mud does NOT slide, it flows. Mud consists mainly of water, and water flows when it moves, it doesn’t slide. My geomorphology professor made sure we knew that in class.

Thanks, Rich Boyer, for the story link. Pittsburgh’s inclines once numbered in the teens; now down to two: Duquesne (mudFLOW : ]), and Monongahela.

The size of the slide mentioned in the article is off by a factor of 10. It was actually 10 X 300. Also, the NS tracks in question are the old Pennsy Panhandle Division.
