I think the most multiples I have ever had of the same car is two. I need to try harder. A beautiful car I have only one of but would love 20, 50 or 100 of are the Weaver PS-2 CD high side CNW cars in green. If anyone wants to add me to their Christmas list I can PM you my address. They made a run in 95 or so and just made another run of them this fall. How many multiples of the same car have you had?
Boyd,
The most multiples I have would be the 3656 cattle car/corral. I have five cars and six corrals. There are still a few variations that I don’t have.
My favorite multiples are the Marx FGEX reefers - there are 16 different numbers and the full consist behind any of my Marx or non-Marx motive power always looks great. Second choice are the AF Morris cars - if you get all mismatched sides (as per the prototype) it is only 3 cars but if you scrounge and locate the oddballs with matching sides you can have 6. After that would be a string of the Atlas reefers from a single owner. I have a nice string of Northern Refrigerator Car Co. reefers with ads for various companies on the sides which looks great as it rolls past.
I now have 12 2465 tank cars, got more since last Christmas [:)]
I bought two grain hoppers in HO because they said Conagra in Nebraska and that’s where I’m from. Wouldn’t you know they show up with the same road number and I’m too lazy to redo one.
I bought a video of the great Sierra Pacific in California and they filmed it with the entire consist being tank cars. The video was great but I like to see different stuff. If I had a theme ry, like coal or such, then I can see long coal trains, but for short floor running I like variety.
But if it a train, then it is good.
I am a fan of the post war NYC Operating Freight Car:

and Sunoco tank cars:

I have 5 LV short hoppers (3 maroon and 2 black). Id like to get a few hundred more…
The first run of the Chicago & North Western PS-2-CD 3-Bay Grain Hoppers was a Custom Run with the 1977-1980 Markings.
The Chicago & North Western PS-2-CD 3-Bay Grain Hoppers in Deep Green that Weaver Models has cataloged for Spring 2008 are based on a CNW paint scheme applied between 1990-1995.
These are not identical CNW paint schemes.

The best I could do to get multiples is to get 7 of the Soo Line PS-2 4427 Low Sided Hoppers made by ATLAS O. Because of the limited supply in each run of the Soo Line 4427 by Atlas, two of the road numbers are duplicates. I had hoped to have all unique road numbers of each hopper.
I also ended up getting two of the Soo Line PS-2-CD 4427 Low Sided Sided Hoppers made by LIONEL. That makes 9 multiples if the Atlas O Soo Line Hoppers are added.
Andrew
I have several 640 hoppers

Several identical boxcars

5 650 New Havens

and I have no idea how many 638 cabooses. They were a common caboose and came with several sets
As far as loco, 5 21160s, 4 290s, 3 300s, 4 283s, 4 282s, 2 Franklins, 3 350s I can think of

We have many multiples, mostly hoppers, including several pw LV hoppers in maroon and black, several NYC boxcars, several pw B&M boxcars, and even a set of twin 2056 pw steamers.
Multiples are a good thing.
I have 3 automatic refrigerated milk cars, and keep looking for the refrigerator car(s) and the color differences in the automatics. The 2338 won’t pull many more of these at one time.

I have multiples of 2 of K-line (old Marx tooling) cars that I got from their freight sets. I wish I had purchased more sets!. I have multiples of the K-line army set cars from multiple set purchases and extra car purchases. I also have multiples of tank cars. Finally, I purchased the 6 car UP box car set. I like to run multiple cars in mixed freight consists because that is how i see them on the railroad. I also run “unit” trains of tank cars, army cars, or UP box cars.
Similar but not quite the same as multiple cars is I like my freight train cars to all match the railroad of the engine/caboose.

Hmm, I’ve a couple of Lionel flat cars but have never purchased the same thing twice. Creating strings of reefers or tank trains looks neat.
Right now I have:
8 PW Lionel gondolas (9 if you count the Scout that can’t run with anything else because of the couplers), 4 Sunoco tankers, 3 LV quad hoppers, 2 Ore dump cars, 2 operating barrel cars and although not all the same version, 7 6464 box cars with more box cars on the horizon.
There’s something special about gondolas and tankers, they look pretty cool when you string several of them together and are usually inexpensive. They are followed by box cars, although they can cost more.

I have a string of 10 925 gulf S guage cars that look very cool as a unit train… and I also throw a few 926 triple domes and 912 kopper tank cars to the mix and it looks very cool… seems the 925 tank cars are very abundant… hmm the 921 CB&Q coal hoppers are very abundant too and light weight… you just sparked a great idea for maybe a 30 car coal train?..
I have about 14 Lehigh Valley quad hoppers; red, maroone and black, 6436 series.
About 16 two bay hoppers in Lehigh Valley; red, yellow, maroone and gray, 6176 series or so numbered.
Have 3 6465 tank cars; two Cities Service, one Sunoco.
Three 6177 hoppers, Reading Lines.
Two 17111 quad hoppers, Reading Lines.
Two 224 steam locos, one is a 224E.
