Museum layout in St. Louis?

Several years ago, MR had an article about a layout that was moved to a St. Louis museum after it’s owner passed away. Does anyone know if that layout is still on display, and if so, the name of the museum? I believe it was located in/near the downtown area. I will be visiting St. Louis in March, and if the layout is still on display, I’d like to try to fit it into my plans.

TIA,
Steve

We saw it in 2005. The name of the museum was ‘City Museum’. And yes, it is in downtown. Sorry I can’t be of more help, but we were there on vacation!

I haven’t been to Saint Louis for many years, but the most likely location for a museum and layout would be the old Union Station.

The old Union Station has been turned into an indoor multi level shopping mall and is a tourist delight

A group from Canada made it happen

The Museum of Transportation has a great display of trains

My friend donated his layout to the museum when he moved to AZ

but i don’t know that it was ever used

This is not to be confused with the afore mentioned layout

I was there at the end of December, and while there are a lot of other transportation related items on display, I did not see any layouts or models. Still a pretty cool museum. I liked having a UP freight come blasting by with an SD90 while I checking out the DD40AX. I heard it in time to get moved to a better viewing location, but I wasn’t able to get more than a glimpse of an Amtrak on the same line later.

Well, I found their Web site and that may be it. They don’t have that layout listed, but it looks like the museum may worth a visit anyway. Thanks for the info!

If you are in St. Louis the first weekend in March you have to head over the river and go to Maryville, IL. about 18 miles from downtown and visit K-10 model trains. They have an open house on the first Sunday of every month. http://www.k-10smodeltrains.com/ this is my local hobby shop and also Cudaken who frequents the list. It is well worth a visit. The museum of transportation is also very good. The City Museum does have a nice HO layout on one of the upper floors. It is a very well done museum, very much targeted at kids. My boys love to visit it.

Looks like TomKat and I were hammering away on the keyboard at the same time!

TomKat, are you still with your modular group?

Yes I’m still with the Boeing RR Club (link is below)…Our big Swap Meet is coming up on March 14th at Queeny Park 550 Wiedman Rd just off Manchester road. The City Museum is great place for a family visit, lots & lots to see.

Great. I’ll make a note in the diary. I enjoyed the last one I came over to. The Boeing layout is very nice indeed.

Steve - Yes, the museum is awesome. The museum is mainly stuff taken from different buildings that were being demolished or renovated around St. Louis. Very cool stuff.

Have fun!
