must you strip the paint?

Must you strip the old paint off eg. loco or boxcar or can you apply a coat of primer and then paint over the old paint of the model? rambo1…

I tried that once many years ago when I was repainting a MoPac boxcar. If I looked at the repainted car just right, I could see the old Mopac logo still there. Since then, it has been strip, prime, paint, decal, dullcote.

oops, I left out the step of glosscote between paint and decal!

It’s one of the questions that can best be answered by “it depends.” On what type paint you plan to use, what type paint you’re painting over, and if you actually want the effect of a shadow of a former paint scheme or logo like Shawnee mentions above. In some cases this may actually be a desired effect.
