Greetings!
After not touching my 4x8 HO layout for sometime, I’ve decided that I’d like to try selling it so I can use the cash on other hobbies. I’m curious if anyone has had any luck selling layouts before or if it winds up becoming something that you sell individual components from.
Are there any good places to try selling my old HO stuff? Anyone ever successfully sell their layout?
Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Here are some shots of the layout as it stands now.
If there are classified forums for MRR folks, can you please provide me with links? I don’t intend this post to be an ad for selling my layout, but I was hoping to find out information about trying to sell it.
These forums were very helpful during my build (few years ago) and I truely appreciate everyone’s help over the years. Thanks in advance!

I have seen folks do OK selling layouts on eBay. Most sellers require you to pick up the layout yourself because it isn’t feasible to ship them.
That was the last place I expected to be able to sell an entire layout lol
I suppose it doesn’t hurt to try though. I’ll wait a little bit and give it a shot in a week or so. Thank you for the suggestion.
First off, your layout is pretty nice.
I had a 4x9 layout that I built butdidnt want it right after it was done because I could only run small 4 axle engines around the layout. So I decided to sell it and my choice was on Ebay. I listed it about three times before it finally sold. You have to realize that your area is the biggest factor. You have to have someone in the area ready to buy a layout since it cannot be shipped. So I started my bid the first time at $500, then $450, then finally $375 before it sold. I didnt care about the money because I was going todonate to someone that would like to build onto it. I just needed it from my basement to make room for a new layout. On a 4x8 layout starting bid to get bids coming will have to be around $250 so people will get into bidding wars. If you start it too high you may not get any bids or just one and lose out.
That is very encouraging to hear. If layouts are pulling 375 for the buildings but no engines, cars etc… that sounds very decent to me. If I choose eBay your advice of a ~$250 opening bid sounds very reasonable. Thank you.
Do you think (if I go eBay) that selling the engines and transformer separate would be a good idea? (better than possibly losing out by coupling them with the layout itself?)
Oh, and thank you for the compliment
Call your local hobby shops and see if anyone has asked them if an already-built layout is for sale. I get a few calls from folks wanting a layout that is already done, perhaps stores up in your area get the same calls.
If I were you, before I listed it on Ebay, I’d look around for upcomming trainshows in and around my area. You’d have lots of people under one roof interested in the same thing. Very nice 4X8, by the way.
Thanks!
I’ll check with some local hobby shops, maybe they know of some upcoming train “fairs”
I agree - very nicely done! I’d try a trainshow or even post at the local grocey store or on Craigs List.
If you live in or near an affluent area, I’d bet there’d be a few dads (or moms) looking for a RTR layout for kids in the 6 to 10 age range. Younger and they couldn’t handle it, older and they’d probably want to build their own.
