my connected farm house project

Hello I am starting my first laser kit. It’s made by http://mountbluemodelco.com/ It looks like it should be a fun kit and not to hard. This will be my 3rd wood kit. This is what I have done so far.

It’s just the basic house so far but you can see some of the fine detail that will come. I will post more as I go along. Have a nice day Frank

Aren’t they a blast. I did a FSM kit last winter and got hooked. I have done 8 more this summer and had more fun, just like a kid with a new model. Moutain blue model is a new company to me. I will have to look at what they have.

wow ,Im a little slow out the gate …but the saw blade and magnets are a great idea for a glueing jig[Y]as I first looked @ the pict I thought “blade is to show size compairison” then I said" wow maybe he cut that model with that blade"…sorry for straying off topic …J.W.

Hello yes Art they are a blast. I got this kit at the last train show that was the first time I had seen them. They have some cool stuff on there site not a lot of ho but some. I have a FSM old time fright house kit that I am trying to get the nerve up to build that kit has a ton of stuff. Have a nice day Frank

Hello Big Jerr Nope you are right the blade and magnets are for holding stuff while it dries .The house is hiding a L shaped block for doing 90 degree corners.

Hope this helps Frank

Frank ; great info & idea’s for finding uses for garage fodder ,giving them knew life to them…and the dollar savings are a real plus…Thanks again…Jerry

Hey, that’s coming right along, Frank. [Y] I’m looking forward to seeing that fine detailed added and the finished product when you’ve completed it. I knew you’d enjoy that kit when you first showed it to me.

And, while I think of it, Frank, here’s a pic of what I was trying to describe to you about being able to “adjust” those laser windows to look like they are either partially or fully open:

My AMB Interlocking tower shows it much better but you get the idea.

Tom

Wow, nice project. I am trying to get the steam up to start tinkering with buildings/kits again. This helps.

I love the magnet idea and the steel block. Funny, I use magnets in my work all the time (welding, steel fabrication) never even thought about the hobby. Nice one!

Hello well I got it painted white with dark green trim. Working on the door’s and windows now and building the bay window. Tom I like the look of the open window and will have some open as well. here is a pic.

If you guys use the magnets they don’t need to be real strong to hold things I got all those from the dollar store. Canazar I hope this thread helps build steam I really like kits and this is turning out to be a very nice kit. Have a nice day Frank

Hello I would like to add some screen to the to the door. My first thought is light window tinting film? You would still be able to see though it but it would give that hazy look like there is a screen. Any thoughts or better ideas? Thanks Frank

A grey stage gel. The grey scale through 1% increments. My guess for HO scale would be a little thick, but the percentage would be about 5 to 10%.

Any stage or lighting supply company should have them.

Hello thanks Trynn_Allen2 for the idea. But I ended up using a plastic bag and colored it with a black maker it looks ok. Well I got most of the house done I am going to hold off on the roof for now. I have the brick work drying and started on the mud room. Here are some pics.

So far this kit has been fun to work with and seems to be well tought out. One thing I do not like is the peel and stick parts. They still need some glue and the don’t paint very well they need one more pass. Have a nice day Frank

I really like the block and magnets idea. Do you have any suggestions as to where to find a 90 degree block that size? The building itself is really looking great. Thanks.

Hello Tcf11 my dad made it years ago. He was a tool & die maker for 30 years and it was in his tool box. It’s flat and parallel within .002 . Or it used to be. I have not check it in years.I don’t think it needs to be that precise. It just needs to be square. I would think any machine shop would make one for you. They may even have some scrap that might work. Hope this helps Frank

Hello I finely got some time to post some pics. I got most of the house and mud room done and started on the carriage house.

They are not attached yet I still need to glaze all the windows. And I am looking for something to print on the view blocks. Have a nice day Frank

Check the latest issue (Nov/Dec) or Model Railroad Hobbyist (free e-zine), there’s a really nifty article in there on printing buildings on cardstock and part of it has interior walls with pictures and so forth hung on them! Or see if you can find an era-appropriate wallpaper pattern and print that out to scale and make your viewblocks out of them.

Lots of good comments on the modeling here… I haven’t noticed anyone mentioning the prototype–(did I just miss it?)

There was a construction article with scale drawings years and yeaqrs ago about a “connected farmstead” in some northern place like New England. I belive in was in Railroad Model Craftsman.

Hello

Randy thanks for info I will look for the article. I like the idea of the wallpaper.

Leighant I was going to post some info on the prototype but they very in style. There are a couple by me in northeast Ohio that don’t have barns but more of a garage type building. Here is some basic info on the New England farmhouse.

And anyone please feel free to comment on my modeling good or bad or if you have any tips or suggestion that may help. I will be the first to say I am not a painter and it shows But I am getting better with the more I do. Have a nice day Frank

Hello I got all the glazing in the house and mud room done. I put a light coat of gray primer and a rust wash on the roof. It looks darker in the photo then on the layout. Some touch up on the house and finish the chimneys then the out side is done. The carriage house needs a little more work yet. I have been looking at stuff I can use for view blocks to many to pick from. Well here is a photo.

Have a nice day Frank
