My custom Desert Cabooses.

Some days I have a lot of time on my hands at the ambulance company and yesterday was one of those slow days.

My Boss don’t mind us working on our hobbies at work too pass time, I had two older canbooses that I wanted to experiment with, loving the desert I was inspired to make a pair of wrap around mural cabooses, I still need to dull coat them but wanted to share them here while I waited on the dull coat.

I copied the same mural on each side, here are a few single shots of them.

The paints are acrylics, I also tried my hand at some pretty rusted and vandalized box cars also done as a pair, see back ground.

Graffitti is actually hard to do and make it look right I found out.

Here is the other one.

I’m very fortunate to have such a great Boss who lets me take my train projects to work while doing 24 and 48 hour shifts, it helps the time go by.

Any feed back is always welcomed.

happy Rails.

I really like the cabeese! Did you hand paint them? They look awesome!

My Boss don’t mind us working on our hobbies at work too pass time, I WANT YOUR JOB!!!

They turned out nice!

Red Horse

Your style may be a bit unconventional, but I must say you are about the most creative modeler I have seen in a long time…bravo!!

Great job, those cabooses are awesome.

Jess–

As far as the cabeese–are we talking New Mexico/Arizona or WHAT?!! I mean, WOW!! That’s really a striking job of mural painting, especially since it’s done in HO scale. Really remarkable! (Georgia O’Keefe, anyone?)

Tom [bow]

Jess, Not to discourage you from model railroading, but have you ever considered a career as a miniature mural painter!!! The cabeese are terrific!!! My wife has collected some southwestern art & pottery, but none as good as the cabeese!![tup][tup][bow]

I like your murals.

When do you sleep?? It seems like you get more done in a week than most of us do in a year![:D]

The murals are hand painted, I started with a few coats of pure white as a base (acrylics) and then I took a fine line permanant marker to draw the mountains and desert, sky and so on.

I really should post some pics of the other side of these, the scenes are the same on both Cabooses on one side there is a different desert scene on the other side but they match on each Caboose, I know it sounds confusing, 2 murals on 4 sides…LOL!

I had to custom cut a few brushes because I needed a sharp angle with only about 12 hairs on it for one and then about 5 hairs on another but on a stiff brush which I made by cutting a long haired brush short.

These are practise for the Native American Warrior box cars I’ve been wanting too do.

The scene would be from the High Desert around New Mexico area, I hope this answers some of the questions.

Of course I’m unconventional because I didn’t have anyone to tell me that I shouldn’t be doing certain things with my trains…LOL!

My signature says it all, my wife thinks I’m a little escentric but what can I say, I like to experiment with things, I do know I wouldn’t want to try this with N or Z scale thats for sure.

I have an F-7 style loco that I’m thinking of doing something really wild with but I’ll save that for another post down the road, the locomotive don’t run and I’d like to keep it on my layout as a form of advertising for the town.

I did the graffitti on the two box cars first so I could practise with my home made brushes before starting the caboose murals.

Thanks for the kind words, from long time modelers as yourselves this makes me feel good that I’m still progressing, I look forward to the day that I’m considered an old timer in this hobby.

I’ve seen some amazing work by you men and your work has inspired me to think outside the box as they say, some have suggested that I was living on the box flap but thats alright.

I will try many things with

loathar ,

Who needs sleep…he he he ,

Actually I get a few hours at night and then when I’m at the Emt station I usually take a few hour nap depending on the call volume and like I said, I can do my smaller layout projects while on the job and that is a great plus for me.

My Emt partner is into video games so he is allowed to have his video game set up at work, one of our Lady Emts likes to do tile mosaics and she gets a lot of them done at work also.

Our Boss encourages us to indulge in our hobbies on the job so that we don’t get to hate the boredom and leave the company, our Boss prides himself on his cooking and practises all day long and sometimes we are the food tasters , my last Emt base was so darn busy with calls that I would have never been able to read a complete comic book let alone do any kit bashing or painting.

I signed on with this company after I was laid off from the last one when they lost the towns contracts and I already had a buddy over here that was telling me what a great place it was…and it IS!

Hummmm, I feel a nap coming on now…

My Wife says that as long as I get the house repairs done until sun down the nights at home are mine to do my art and work on my layout, she is letting me take over another room because she didn’t think I’d have enough room in the first one when she saw the size of the layout.

I’m so close to running trains I think I can hear them coming around the bend.

Happy Rails!

I think we have a famous model railroad painter here![swg] Great job Red Horse!

Nice painting Jess…

Take caution not to fall into the box, now that you’re outside it. Even more so, if you truely are on the flap.

[:-^]

Jess; That is very creative and imaginitive, the brain waves under that head dress must be going 100 miles an hour.

I don’t care whether you are on the flap or in the box, you are having fun and I think in some cases more fun than alot of us have ever had.

Keep up the great and inventive work my friend, it inspires us to take a look at some of our creativity and think about whats on the other side of the box.

Night all, it is time to get horizontal for awhile.[zzz][zzz][zzz]

Johnboy out…

The “Wobbly” is at the end of the line.

Jess,

Beautiful work … now I have to convince you to come down to Florida to give my northern New Mexico layout a beautiful backdrop (along the Rio Grande). Keep up the good work!

Jim

Very reminescent of the ART TRAIN. Cool.

Jess,

I think your style is simply awesome. You are not thinking outside the box. You’ve carved that sucker up and used it to scratch build something else none of us have even thought of yet. I look forward to all your posts and pictures. They should be seen by all!!!

Does MRR have room in an upcoming magazine???

Jess, that has to be one of the most creative things you’ve tried to date. The results are spactacular! You’ve clearly moved freelancing to a new level. Well done!

Is there a place at work where you could build a layout? If your ambulance company had a layout, it would be a great public relations thing. You could have open houses, and maybe school tours on occasion.

I like the graffiti. Not that I like graffiti in general, but you’ve made the best of the situation by coming up with a great model.

That is a really cool paint job red horse. what an imagination you have!..good job!..chuck
