My first attempt at painting a brass loco and other oddities

Well I stripped her down, cleaned, primed painting and was left with this.

The second and third pictures are a Bachmann Spectrum K4 Pacific with an elesco Feedwater heater[:0]

Nice paint job: it looks like an open frame motor through the cab window so is this an older loco? If so, it looks like you’ve upgraded some of the detail work too. It’s also nice to see someone else who doesn’t fill the tender bunker with a glued-in lump of coal. You’ve also done a nice job onthe K-4: it’s always surprising how much that Elesco system can change the appearance of a loco.

It looks goooodddd.

Nice work, Fergie.

I always liked painting brass, back when I painted brass. The finish always seemed to turn out well. Disassembling it was a pain, particularly older models because things got brittle. Did you have any problems along those lines, or did it cooperate?

Very very Nice!! Good job Fergmiester

That was my 1st hurdle crossed as I will disassemble my CN Hudson within the next day or two. This requires black, green and lots of decals.

I had a lot of problems with the first lot as the gun was gumming up and the pressure was constantly dropping as it was canned air and would loose pressure as the can would get cold.

I thinned thye paint and plan on keeping the canned air in a tin of warm water.

From one painter to anohter. Very nice work.

Ferg,

I am getting to paint my 4-12-2.

I got the decals. The guys at the local club told me this. If it’s has a clear coating, stick in some Mineral Spriits and with a soft brush scub it off. Then soak it for a few hrs. in some vinegar. Next use some soapy water and clean it good. Use some Floquel Primer folowed by your color, black, ect. Mix all paint with Dio-Sol. What paint did you use, and also how did you clean it, mix your paint, ect?

Thanks

Good job Fergie, looking very smart indeed, i take it the paint was not from TEFFY’S Collection [:I][:-,][:I]

I used Tamiya Primer from a spray can and man-o-man this stuff went on better than a spray gun. The only problem I encountered was the overspray and toxicity but as i did this onboard ship at one in the morining and in the Engineer’s workshop and with full face respirator and good ventilation this wasn’t a problem.

I used Badger Engine Black and the two problems I encountered was the paint should have been thinned by 40% and the compressed canned air cooled down and lost pressure. I applied the brass numbers las tnight and then I will clear coat the engine.

I don’t see how it could’ve come out better! I’m mez…mez…merized
Awesome Job!

Looking good Fergie!! Glad to see you were on the forums while taking these photos too, shows that you are always around… [;)]

Gosh, that’s not half shabby, Fergie! Looks like you actually knew what you were doing!!

Gooooooood.

VERY nice job, Fergie. In fact, if you say it’s your first brass loco paint-job, then you’re doing just fine. How about a little info on the loco for we fellow brass freaks? Make, model, how old, etc. It’s a really handsome one.

It’s a Pacific Fast Mail B&O 2-8-0. As to the age I honestly can’t say. Picked it up at my LHS for $450 Cdn. It’s a good runner and I plan on putting DCC sound in it in the near future. I gave it clear coat this morning and primed the CN K-5a 4-6-4.
