My first ever weathered car

Okay, I know I already posted this in Sunday Show Off, but I’m semi proud of it. Makes me think there’s hope that someday I can aspire to Mike or Aggro’s shadow.

For running it’s over the top, but for where it will be on the layout, it works for me. This is N-scale.

If that car is in captive service and won’t be interchnaged it is fine. if you are going to interchange it you need to have visible reporting matks on it. At a minimum the owners mark and car number for billing service. The rest can be determined form the ORER by a railroad running it. Nice weathering though.

Wow, what a rust bucket! Good job.

It was abandoned when the mine closed because it has no front trucks.

Not a bad start SpaceMouse, I’m teetering on whether to take the weather plunge and take a shot at a Peabody Coal Co. hopper. I got some dullcoat and I need to give it a splash black wash. If this thread lives long enough I’ll post some pics of my own.

There’s only one way to learn–hold your nose and leap. I find it very useful to study pictures of the prototype.

hello altoonarailroader you say that you are going to weather a coal car i suggest that you take a close look at coal wagons … coal dust oxidises into a brown color the coal reacts with the oxigen and " burns " this gives the wagon a slightly brown color… ps i work for peabody coal post a photo when you weather the wagon peter

Thanks for the info Peter. Do you happen to have a pic of one of those cars I can use as a proto-type for starting out? I’ll show you mine if you show me yours. LMAO!!!

Mouse-nice start. As mentioned,I would add a road name and reporting marks. Then a thin black wash to tone the car down a little. When I put on a black wash I wipe it off till I get the desired effect. Here’s a pic of a hopper I did

Just keep practicing until you have a technique that works for you. Bob

Thanks,

However, I am modeling a mine that has been abandoned for 40+ years. Now I don’t know for sure, because I’ve never actually seen a car that has been abandoned for 40 years, but I imagine that given the corrosives in the mining operation that the marks might not be in serviceable condition. That is not to mention that the car itself does not have front trucks and is propped up on railroad ties.

However, if you look closely, you’ll see that there are places where the roadname shows through.

I’ll give a nickle to the first person who tells me the correct road name. And yes there is enough info to tell.

Chip,

I know the answer, It is in memory of “ROCK & HARDSPOT” RR.
