My First Proto

Well today i unwrapped a B&M Sw8 switcher it looks really good i plan to give it switching duties on my biggest yard (have not decided the name) So are these Locos good?? Thanxs Tim

Congratulations!

I own several Proto locomotives. They run decently, though my SD45 needs a new motor hopefully Walthers will get me a replacement.

Ironically the mechanisms on my Geep and E units are very similar to Athearn RTRs, however, running is smoother and quieter.

Some modelers make nit-pick comparisons to Atlas and Kato, which is not reasonable. Atlas and Kato units have superior drives and performance…which is why one also pays “superior prices” for them. Comparing a P2K with an Atlas is like comparing a Toyota Camry to a Lexus LS400. There’s good…and there’s “premium”.

As far as “the bang for the buck” P2Ks come with beautiful detailing and decent drives and are a good value, IMHO.[:D][;)]

I’ve got about a dozen Life-Like GM switchers and they are by far my best running locos. After I got my first unit the Athearn units were dropping like flies. The only thing I don’t like about them is that there is no weight at the cab end. I added a few pieces of lead to the cab for more weight, but I can get only so much in there.

Tim,

I have one of the Proto 2000 S1 switchers. I wired it for DCC and it is my best locomotive at slow performance. This thing absolutely crawls! As others have mentioned, the detailing is superb.

Thanxs guys after looking over the loco i have noticed that it has wonderful deatiling the back cab windows even have wipers one them. I think my Atlas and Katos do run better but this one is still a very nice engine by the way i forgot to mention it is of the Hobby Quality series i think that series is only in N scale??? Thanks again Tim
