I got this idea to do this from the thread, “How did you name your railroad ?”. I mentioned that I named mine the Blue Valley Railroad. Well, I spent a few hours last night trying to draw and figure out a paint scheme that I liked. Sorry, but I don’'t have a scanner. I came up with one and looked at the engines that I had and found one. Its an old Model Power Santa Fe Dummy, later on I plan on painting a powered engine so that way I can run them.
Here are a few pictures of the engine at first.

The snow plow on the dummy was broken so I’m replacing it with one from an old Bachman body, on the left. It was cut off and glued to the dummy body and it fit pretty good. Right now the body is sitting in some paint stripper and should be out in a few hours. More pictures to come later today.

Nice cant wait to see them as they progress. Joe A.
well cant wait for the pics of the engine to come out![^]
Thanks guys. I just pulled it out of the paint stripper about an hour ago and none of the paint came off. I should have known it was molded in that color. A few primer coats were sprayed a little bit ago and I snapped a picture. Once I get off of the computer, I’m going to load up the airbrush and put a few coats of white on the body.

Are you going to letter it for your railroad?
It is always good to do an actual model of the paint scheme before it is adopted. Some things that look great on paper can look really stupid in 3D. After having a “paper” paint scheme for many years I finally painted up my first caboose. The locomotives and other equipment I’ve done through the years look fine but this caboose - Gag. The railroad’s “freight” colors and this scheme I chose make it look like a crayon box with the yellow and green reversed. Oh well, back to the drawing board.
Coborn35, yes I’m going to letter and number it which leads to a question.
Where could I find numbers and letters to spell out Blue Valley and number the engine? Earlier I tried to cut them out of decal paper and they looked terrible. Printing them off from my computer dosen’t work either, the printer hates decal paper.
Zepher, I know what you mean. At this point in time I have the white masked off and will put the blue on here soon. I masked off the way it was drawn on paper, but it looked terrible so I modified it and I liked it better.
If I get back from Church soon enough, then I will try and finish up the painting. If so some completed paint pictures will be up in a few hours.
hey this is fun
I seen a tip to use a razor to make a nice edge on the tape try it
Butastic
I hope you roughed up the original surface before you shot the primer.
I can’t wait to see how your paint scheme turns out. I have thought about come up with my own scheme for quite some time, I have just been too scared to do it. I think I will do it one I have a chance to play with the new air brush and get used to it. I have plent of old TYCO rolling stock to practice with.
Thanks guys and Merry Christmas.
Bud, yeah its a good thing to do.
Farve, sometime later this week I hope to work on some rolling stock to match this engine. Have fun with the airbrush, btw.
I’ll post some finished pictures like I said. I still need to number and letter it, and put so details like a horn. Once the rolling stock it started, I’ll post some progress pictures of them.

Looking good Brian, can’t wait to see it when it is all finished, and the rolling stock as well
Thanks again guys. The rolling stock is picked out, a few box cars and a couple tankers. They should be started tomorrow.
Brian,
I like it! Too cool.
One thing I felt should be mentioned though. Some paints are “stubborn” in getting off. It’s not unusual in some cases to have to let a model soak for 12 hours or more. As a model soaks you can test the surface with a toothbru***o see if any paint lifts off.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing your finished work, but remember…don’t rush! We’ll still be here if it takes you a few days to get it looking sharp!
Painting is actually pretty easy. The masking was a pain but otherwise it was enjoyable.
Nice looking livery!! I like it!! A cool way to do the exhaust area. I’ve some modelers talk about finishing thier painting off with ‘Dulcote’ which I think seals the surface. Will you do that on this engine?
WOW that looks excellent! Can’t wait to see the finished product! Please keep us updated with plenty of pictures!
Chris
Thanks. John, yes I do plan on dullcoating it once I decal it with letters and numbers, which btw I have found a source.
Brain,
I just realized that this paint scheme reminds me of a photo I saw four or five years ago of an “Ontario Northland” commuter train. The train was pulled by an F unit painted in a similar scheme, and I think it included a thin yellow stripe.
In any case…ultra cool!
