My highway flashers don't flash

I’m building and American Flyer layout and I’ve just added a highway flasher. I wired it according to the AF directions (2 track trips on either side of the “highway”; on black wire connecting on trip to one terminal know on flasher; second black wire connecting two trips together; trips installed so adjusting lever is on base side of track; yellow wire connecting second terminal on flasher to 15 volt bus wire using a suitcase connection.)

When I turn on the power, the light glow brightly, which is nice, but they’re suppose to be off unless the train is running over the trips, in which case, they’re supposed to flash one-and -off alternately. But they don’t. They stay on all the time, no matter is the train is running over or even sitting on the track trips.

What did I do wrong? I saw something in another forus about splitting a wire. EEK!

When I had American Flyer trains way back in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, we couldn’t afford a crossing flasher, and I don’t know if AF even made one back then.

But I think you’ll get a faster answer if you post your question on the Classic Toy Trains forum, because that’s where most S and O scale people hang out. This forum is haunted mostly by HO and N scale people.

And…this would probably be more appropriately posted on the Electronic and DCC forum.

Try Googling “problems with flashers.” It won’t resolve your issue in the least, but you might be entertained.

Bulldoggirl,

I did not address this in my orignal reply, but splitting a wire, is not so terrible as it may sound. Think of a Y, the tail of the Y is the power source, one wire, the V is two wires tapped into the tail, that go to two different structures at the same time, rather than to one then the other. I have a feeling that could be part of your problem with your crossing flashing lights.
