This is just a photo-spread of my latest project.
It started as a Kaslo FP9 kit (nice kit available only from Central Hobbies) and I added the nessesary details to get it close to VIA 1432.
Prototype:

My model:

The lighting was done by SMT Leds just behind the lights themselves.

The speaker was mounted on a baffel over the rear truck.

The B unit (under construction) is another ex-CPR unit.

And finally weathered to bring out the details…

Mighty fine-lookin’ piece of work![tup] What kind of sound decoder did you put in?
David,
That is looking really good! Did you build the baffle out of styrene?
Also, what horn sound are you using? I like the sound of Canadian Tuned horns, but have seen so few available. QSI, if I’m not mistaken, offers one ( S3K ?). My favorite Canadian horn is the Canadian Tuned Nathan K5H. [{(-_-)}]
Very nice job David!! I also have a Kaslo kit waiting to be done, It is an FP9 also, and ex CN unit. It will be done over as the FP9 that runs on the Conway Scenic RR. Very inspiring work David. How are things in Calgary tonight ?
Very Nice!, but what happened to the icicle breakers on the ex-CP units. All my pictures from the 70’s in Calgary show these units with icicle breakers on them.
Rick
The icicle breakers were removed when they where sold to VIA.
The horn is from a recording of 1432. If you search for Via FP9 in Youtube, it is the 3rd hit.
Tonight in Calgary it is wet…very wet.

Great work! I really like the lighting. Do you have a link to the smt LED supplier? I’m having a hard time finding a source for that color white in smaller quantities.
Thanks David,
I’ll check out the You Tube vid.
Re: Your baffle. Is it fabricated or is this a unit that can be purchased?
Here is a link to the LEDs
http://cgi.ebay.com/50X-SMD-SMT-PLCC-2-White-LEDs-2000mcd-F-R-Free-ship_W0QQitemZ260245757147QQihZ016QQcategoryZ66954QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Please note that the actual color of the LEDs is VERY white. What I did was give them a coat of yellow. The problem is, it changes the color to VERY yellow. If you look close at the front end LED pic, you can see how I adjusted the color by scraping the yellow paint. This gave me the color that you see in the illimated pics.

The baffle is built out of styrene. Very basic stuff. The trick is to make sure it is airtight before goo-ing the speaker to it (I mount it face down into the box). I prefer to have everything (including the lights) on the chassis.

David,
here’s the You Tube link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=OGWcUAi0VpU
You were right, 3rd one down . Definetly a sweet sounding Canadian Tuned Nathan.
Thanks!
I wonder, what is so appealing about the Canadian tuned horns, eh?
David B
I understand your wondering.
Here in the Tampa Bay area, I live just over a mile from the CSX “A” line where intermodals, units trains, and Amtrak whip by. I can clearly hear horns and prime mover sounds from my neighborhood. It’s quite routine that the horns you will most likely hear are the Nathan K5LA, K5H series, and the Leslie RS5Ts. Occasionally I’ll hear a Nathan P5, making the odds that it’s likely an older NS unit in the lead. But “Once in a Blue Moon” I’ll hear a Canadian Tuned horn, as CP units do make it down here every now and then. Quick attention getter. [{(-_-)}]
For me it’s a nice change from the usual. [8D]
Very nice work! I especially like the way you mounted the SMT LEDs. That’s the most practical way I’ve seen anybody do that.
Very impressive and I loved the video. My question for you David is how do you like the Digitrax decoder? I’ve heard one or two generic Digitrax and wasn’t totally sold on them but I’ve heard the programable ones may be better.
Really nice job on the weathering… Reallly Nice!
Fergie
Very nice job, outstanding modelling work.
But I have to point out to you that that CPR 1432 was actually an FP7 with a 36" dynamic brake and horizontal side grilles. The FP9’s were only numbered 1405-1415.
Here is some handy info on all CPR FP7 and FP9 numbers and details
