I just recently completed this rebuilt Akane USRA 2-10-2:
If you’d like to see some “in-progress” shots, check Building Beeg Boy… - be warned, if you’re on dial-up, there are LOTS of pictures. [:O][swg]

WOW, doc, nice work! Love the documentary… I am considering my first brass buy, remotor and repaint, but I am daunted by the task! Good job!

She’s a beauty![tup] Wheels and running gear look great!
Wow, Doc, great job! And that might just be the most realistic river I’ve ever seen on a model RR!!! (I can practically smell it.)

Wow, watching the build is almost overwhelming. Now I see why your locos look so much better than anything else I’ve seen. That is truly amazing!
Thanks to all for the kind words, especially considering the length of the post in that link. [swg]

Wow Wayne really great work
I love big steam and you did a great job bringing this beauty to life !
doctorwayne, the detail that you added was stunning. This is a great rebuild. I especially liked the way you detailed the tender. This is very neat work. The pictures were very helpful and were appreciated. Thank you for sharing them.

Drwayne–
That’s an absolute STUNNER of a loco! I read your article and drooled over the photos of the rebuild. Of course, you had a darn good loco to start with–those old Akanes are built like Sherman Tanks and really run well (I’ve got about five Akanes). But the job you did is just OUTSTANDING!
I like what you said about the original tender having a ‘water scoop’. My Akane USRA Heavy Pacific has one, also–I think all of their USRA’s came with ‘water scoops’. (“Water scoop” on a 2-10-2–really funny[:P].
But you should be proud of that job–it’s one of the best brass conversions I’ve ever seen. Reminds me of those old Bill Schopp articles in RMC years ago when he’d get hold of a brass loco and turn it into something you’d never expect. I think he said, “Brass isn’t SACRED, it’s just good to work with.”
You sure proved that with this conversion. Just gorgeous!

Doc, your photography and documentation process are flawless, just like your modeling.

Thanks lots for the “show and tell”! That was really fun (and of course, inspiring).

Once again, thanks to all for the kind words and warm reception. [:)]
Here are a couple more photos of the loco, taken by the friend for whom the loco was built:
