Well group I am finally to the stage of buillding benchwork! It has been 3 long years to get to this point. I started with just wanting to build a layout room but the wife had different plans! I am glad that she did because it is so well worth it. See the photo from start to finish.
This is when I started to re-do the steps.
Next was oak on the steps and shelves
Drywall in the room:
Wall:
More shelves:
Ceiling:
And finally floor ( note the wood is 200 plus year old oak) :-):
Beautiful oak flooring. Where did you 'salvage" the board? Nice job sleepering the floor and insulate. Was the oak already tongue and groove or did you mill? How level/ flat was the concrete? Any scribing or shimming the sleepers or did you get lucky? Fantastic job!
Thanks for the compliments! Barn wood was from a friend’s barn that he was putting a new roof on. I was talking to him one day and he asked if I wanted some “old wood” I jumped at the offer and got the wood in August. 4 long months of pulling nails, running thru the table saw and bench top planer. I smoked my old planer and had to buy a new one to finish. The wood is really hard! As for toung anf groove. it is not. Just butt joints and face nailed. There is over 4000 nails in this floor! As for the floor being level, well I just put the 2x2’s down and let it run as the floor sloped. Only 1 spot is a bit sloped since it was over the drain. Really can’t tell when walking on it. Also polyurethaned both bottom and top of the wood for extra protection from moisture. Almost 10 gallon of brushing.
My intention for the look of the room was to somewhat get the feel of being inside/outside if an old baggage car. The rollers for the barn door was an e-bay find and they say “baggage car” right in the casting. With the rustic/old wood floor and the metal ceiling I felt I got the right feel.
