I got my other OMI Turbine today. I wanted one with the Auxilery Tender and also the UP C-6 Caboose. It all came as a set. It has never been ran and the middle Turbine unit is powered. I want to show in detail how to paint a brass engine for those who either don’t know or those who are a little scared to tackle it. I have painted many brass Steam and Diesel engines and will put my work up against the best of them. I don’t use a $300.00 Airbrush with a $200.00 compressor. I use a $99.00 Airbrush that came with a compressor from Ebay. It workes great. I will show every pics of all the steps I take to paint this monster. From removing the first screw to how I use Vinegar to etch the brass to masking all the parts. If you take your time and follow the steps it will turn out great. I will show pictures of every step I use, including paint and mixing it. I will not post the pics here (because there will be to many) but with show them on another sight.
First, I am so jealous of you that I could bite through a nail. [:)] Now, after that little hissy fit, I’d be real interested in a good series about how you paint brass.
I have #6 in N scale, that came painted from OMI. I’m anxious to see your results.
I have a question for you though. Did they ever run an 8500 with an extra tender? Not trying to be a rivet counter here, but I can’t find any pictures of that arrangement in any of my reference material.
It’s an impressive consist, can’t wait to see it in armor yellow and harbor mist gray.
Come to think of it NO. I have 2 Pentrax videos on Turbines and there is not one picture of a Turbine with the extra tender. I have other OMI Turbines. I have a 3 Unit “Big Blow” like this without the extra tender. I have 2 “Veranda’s” also. I have not put the unit on my main layout yet. I still need to install couplers. The other 'Big Blow" I have pulls like a horse. Here is a few pics of a painted one exactly like mine. I am almost 100% sure this set from OMI DID NOT come factory painted. This one was also custom painted. It went for $2750.00 on Ebay.
This is my turbine and it pulls well too, but it took some massaging to get it to run well out of the box.
The Geep 7 in the picture has been replaced by an SD24.
It’s train is 43 cars long, but I was playing around once and had it pulling 85 cars. The tail end of the train was leaving one end of the layout as the power was re-entering at the other end.
First off, I’m a UP fan (if you all didn’t know by now)…
Second, what is up with UP’s goofy cabooses?!?! I’m all for safety and all, but sheesh. I just can’t stand them white billboards splashed on the sides.
Third, I’ve not seen any extra tenders in any of my books (not that I have all that many). Heck just learned about the GP’s use to haul 'em back if they got clogged.
Loco, the UP first started using those safety billboards sometime in the late 60’s. I think they may have been the first railroad to do this. They were slogans submitted by employees. The caboose had a frame that held the sheet steel (or aluminum, not sure which) that had the painted slogan. They were switched out every couple of months. I think there were over 100 different slogans, all hand-painted by the shop crews. They actually looked pretty good in real life and it adds some interest to an otherwise plain red and yellow caboose.
The place I bought it from would custom paint it for $875.00. They would also wanted extra for the constant lighting on the head unit and also the Fuel tenders + a crew. I love the way those Cabooses are painted.
