My new layout...curved turnouts

I would like to build the layout on this page;

Does anyone have a guess of what turnouts were used???

I tried to email the owner to no avail…

Here is another link to the layout page

It is difficult to tell, but the photo of the turnout in the second link suggests to me that it is a #7, possibly a #6…but I don’t think so.

Looking at the photograph, from the funny bump just to the right of the the points and the double gap plastic section just to the left of the frog it is a Peco Insulfrog turnout. The funny bump contains a spring to hold the points one way or the other. However from the track plan diagram I cannot tell the exact model. I am guessing since this is a 4’ x 4’ layout that it is one of the smallest that they make (models ST-244 and ST-245). Plus those two models ares the only ones that I know of where the inside curve is longer than the outside. As I recall the inside curvature is just under 18" (something like 17.75" r) and the outside is just short of 22" (19.25"r or so).

For several reasons frog numbers (like #4, #5, #6, etc.) are meaningless for curved turnouts. Manufacturers might put numbers on them but that is only marketing. The departure is based totally on the difference in the two radii.

I would go for such a test layout with 20’’ radius. Then you can use turnouts 18’’ / 20’‘. Or everything 2’’ bigger. I wouldn’t go smaller.

If I am not mistaken there was a very similar layout of the Bronx river terminal or something NYC I saw an article some where I believe if memory serves me correct they are all hand layed turnouts

From whom I can’t say if I find the article I’ll send you the link

Do you mean this? CNJ Bronx Terminal

Wolfgang

The main man at Fast Tracks is building the CNJ Bronx Terminal. Other than having a double track tight-radius loop (With the donut-shaped freight house in the middle on the prototype based model) there is absolutely no resemblance between the two. This layout apparently uses off-the-shelf Peco turnouts. The CNJ layout is a wonderland of puzzle palace switchwork, meant to be a tour de force by a master tracklayer. In addition to the double-track loop, the CNJ layout has multi-track yards, a car float apron and a short spur reached by placing a short length of removeable rail.

Also, the CNJ layout’s minimum radiu is about 12.5 inches…
