Finally, new layout!!!
Dosn’t look like much, but it’s something.
I know, I know, I already have alot of no no’s.
Talk about basic benchwork, L brackets!! Hey, but they work!
I’ll add some 2x4’s soon to strengthen it up a bit.
Also a no no…I have not even chosen a prototype, era, location, even road!!!
SLAP ME!!!
But I figured that since I have a few ideas (just need to decide which one) I’ll get started on benchwork and then I can decide what I can model with the space I have. Who knows???

So far so good, 20" deep, 4 feet high

L brackets

Leftovers from old layout

Layout will extend on right wall with folded up table about 8 feet

Then extend to the left another 5 feet till the wall, tear a hole, hello staging in closet!
First stage will be an L shaped layout against two walls. I like continous running but I dont like the look of a huge 4x4 at either end for a reverse loop!
Any Ideas, so far plans are 20" deep sections along the two walls, 13ft, and 10 feet. Any ideas?? Thanks
All right. I just did a similar shelf for a staging area. Put a 1" piece of foam on top. Works nice. A 4x4 place for a loop makes a nice opportunity for a mountain. You can turn an engine with a wye or a turntable but to turn a train to go round and round you need a couple of loops. You could put one in the closet and maybe one in a corner?? Nice lookin CN boxcar in the background.
good start!
how you did yo post the pics?
Good deal. It feels good to get some sawdust on the floor, actually get started building.
You might want to consider angle braces back to the wall instead of legs under the outer edge of your shelf. I added one leg like that as reinforcement under my drill press in the shop and it’s a major pain. With nothing to attach the leg to the floor, it’s always getting knocked crooked, or in the way.
Something else that affected my layout was getting all the track, laying it, running all the wiring, chasing out all the bugs, then changing the plan, just a simple change, to add a siding and one spur, and to electrically isolate all the other spurs.
Now, instead of running new trains, and working on scenery, I’m back laying track, looking at another big wiring job, not a setback exactly but a retrenchment and not near as much fun as forward progress.
If you can avoid such backtracking, it will help as far as motivation goes. I used Atlas teack planning software, invaluable in getting the design together, but the error was in thinking a too small space might accomplish a borderline task, when deep down, i knew it wouldn’t work. That left a hole in the plan later on, which I filled with the new siding and spur. Two lessons learned, one, if your gut says no, listen to it, and two, without track planning software, I’d be even further behind than I am now.
