So i got this 2 weeks ago and am finally in the final stages before i mount it to the layout. It has been quite an experience (trying to)painting, weathering and construction. So i guess im saying let me have it guys. The good the bad and the stuff I can improve on. (the tape is just temporary. Remember its my first kit ive ever built to this extent.
Your photos are great. First, let me say you are further along in this kind of a kit build than I am. There are however, 3 things that I would like to suggest. First, I think the roof should be a different color than the walls, like black for a tarred flat roof. Second, I’ll bet there should probably be yellow safety lines along the edges of the work platforms and the pits. And for a final touch, lots of workmen. It’s going to be a very nice addition to your layout. By the way, whose kit is it?
I agree with Tom make the roof black, will make a while lot of difference, and remember to weather the outside with black paint but lightly spray it where the diesels enter the building, and oil spots on the concrete. Add yellow safety stripes like Tom Suggested. But what I see you did an excellent job on building.
Good job on the enginehouse and the photos! A different color on the roof and maybe paint the housing for the overhead doors a different color would give a little contrast to the appearence of the building. There appears to be a wooden barrel on the platform that to me looks out of place, but then this is your building. These are just things I see that to me stand out that I would do and are not meant to degrade the work you have done on the model. Like I said you did a great job and now I have to go and see if I can order one. They look a lot better than I dreamed they would especially the platforms inside. Thanks for posting. Jim
Must be a brand new shop, though. No evidence of oil or paint spills, no little windrows of ??? the sweeping crew didn’t quite clean up…
After years of working where heavy machinery is maintained, I can assure you that such places do not resemble a NASA clean room! Even the neat freaks who run the U.S. Air Force have never quite gotten a periodic maintenance hangar or engine shop completely clean - or anywhere near it.
Another thing you might want to look at is signage. A prototype installation has safety reminders everywhere - and a big billboard close to the main (people) entrance emblazoned with “#### Days (or Man-Hours) Since the Last Lost-Time Accident,” often with a red, yellow or green light depending on the size of ####.
You’ve done a great job of preparing the basis for a contest winner. The Devil is in the details. LOL.

i thought about the roof also but its a corrugated metal roof so black tar wouldnt do all that great, ill get working on the handrails right away ;-}

i did paint the entrances of the building with a black spray up the walls but the camera i guess doesnt pick it up too well, I think its a mix of model power and presier stuff for the work crew

yes the kit is awesome when it is finally built, nice detailing it includes also

do you know of any pictures of a real roundhouse i can use, i havent been able to find any good pics to model oil slicks after.
The sign is a great idea but i would have to put it for number of minutes not injured, just because im working there hahahah
Thanks every one for the suggestions ans keep the new ones rolling in.
Ahh yes I see the black paint now, on a laptop you dont see that great of detail but with my desk top I see it now. I may have to get this buiding in the future just to have it and build it. For the roof since its suppose to represent metal get some Model Flex Rust paint and streak it in areas lightly tho to give it some contrast and like its been there or maybe weather it with black paint like the exhaust floated up etc etc just some ideas thats all. Great job and hope to see the work crew moving in soon with some pics.
Very nice. I purchased the same kit. I need to determine how I will carve out the foam to set the base into the section of benchwork. How much fun did you have with all the individual rail supports? I did not find any reference to how to install the rails inside the pits. I also have Walthers overhead crane kit which I believe will work with this model. Also need to figure out how to shoe-horn in the diesel fuel facility and sand towers with a 2x8 foot section.
^ I have the same problem, the base was too thick so i had to raise a section of my yard and i have to fit my fueling depot into the rest of the area i have. If you have any pics id love to see it just as a comparison.
The floor is to thick? Ever thought of using woodland scenics foam roadbed as a part of the layout? If you look at my layout specially the yard WS super sheets of roadbed might bring the rest of the yard up to the level you need. I do not know since I do not have this model “yet” check it out and see if it might help.
To see my yard click on the www button on the post it will send you to my layout website.
The base of the Diesel shop is 0.62" deep - it has the inspection pits molded in. Given that I am using Woodland Scenics N gauge sheets for the yard - that measures out to 0.3" bottom of roadbed to top of rail. That means that I have to carve out 0.3" of my 2" foam to set the base properly. I guess I coud just ramp it but I don’t think that would look right.
I am thinking about using a router - but boy is it going to be messy. I don’t have any photos yet - I only have two 2 x 4 sections bolted together to test fit the service facility.
ohhh hey molded the inspection pits in ok I didnt know that live and learn. I believe a router would be messy use an xacto knife to cut where the pits are then use Tenax to melt the foam. Use a brush and go slowly its controlled. I know it sounds like a waste of tenax but it works.
I would agree with the black roof, but I believe I would go just a bit further and install a “sawtooth” roof, at least on the lower section, as there can never be too much light. Depending on your era, solar collectors can also be added as shown:
Sure don’t. I don’t see it as too hard to scratchbuild though… If it turns out badly, the original roof can still be used. Try Grandt Line, Pikestuff or SS for the windows. After that, it should be easy.
I used a piece of flex track and took enough ties out ti run the length of the building. I left one tie every 3-4" and then once I had the rails glued to the supports I took a pair of needle nose pliers and twisted them off. The overhead crane is supposed to work but I never installed one.
Mine is in an area where I have 1/2" plywood. I cut a hole the size of he shop and dropped it in the hole (with a new bottom ). That worked perfect with lining up to the Woodland Scenics roadbed.
