My own pipedream

It looks like it is going to happen. I’m going on vacation to Northern Wisconsin. Of course, it is happening during the NMRA show so I can’t go to that. But since it is a (my wife’s) family reunion, I will have a lot of downtime.

So I am bringing my most complicated cratsman kit, a Muir silver mine to build. And to break up the time, I’m installing 3rd Planit on my wife’s laptop.

So, any good layouts to visit in the Northwoods of Wisconsin?

I’ll be gone for 10 days. You think everything will be okay here without me?

Have fun with that kit! I want to see a picture of it when your finished. It sounds like it will be a cool trip.[8D]

WHAT!!! No spacemouse for almost 2 weeks!

Have fun and try and look up from your model building from time to time to say hello to some of her relatives…it’ll go a long way towards your future sanity if you know what I mean.

unless northern wisconson is a complete wilderness there will be some sort of internet access there . i know you can’t stay away from here for 10 days !

Did I mention my fishing boat. Every year I’m expected by the family to have a fish fry on Thursday night. This year, because of a family wedding, I won’t be able to start until Monday afternoon. That is fish for 16 people. (haven’t failed yet in almost 20 years.)

Chip,

Just a question on feasiblility. Assuming you are able to get some work done on your craftsman silver mine. Are you going to be able to transport it back (in whatever state of completion it is at the end of vacation) without damaging it? Or, do you do not expect to get it that far along?

Chip, have a wonderful vacation. Make sure you spend some time with your family, too.

Tom

I’m not worried about transpotation. I know how to pack things. But, if I get the paint done, which is by far the most time consuming part, I’ll be happy. I fish during the morining and evening. Afternoons and night, the time is free. I usually read, 3-4 novels. This time one silver mine and a layout.

The kids will go fishing with me or on boat rides. My wife will spend all night talking with her sisters then sleep then they all sleep alll day.

Chip, I’m curious, do you know a town near where your going? I’m curious to know where you’ll be, since I live in Wisconsin Myself.

Noah

My nephew was the clown at Tommy Barlett’s for about 5 years. My wife’s family has a cottage on Lake Nikomis. It is just north of Tomahawk off the Interstate 39.

That’s a loooooong ways from where I am then. I’m closer to Tommy Barlett’s, infact I’m about 20 minutes from it.

Noah

Hey, I’ve got a cabin up near Lake Wissota!

Chip, if you get REALLY bored, drive over to the National RR museum in Green Bay (it’s a couple hour’s drive). It’s one of the nicer museums in the country, and they’ve got a lot of neat old stuff (and finally, a real, operating steamer!). Keep it in mind for one of the days it rains!

To bad you can’t go to the NMRA show. You could of told us how great it was!! Well anyways, have fun with the kit!!

mmmmm fishing half the day and model building the rest … where do i book a vacation like that ?

have fun , see ya in a while [:)]

If you are into logging railroads, try Camp Five Museum and Lumberjack Special steam train in Laona, Wi. They have a steam train ride to a logging museum. Here is a website for more information www.campmuseum.org They would be about 60 miles from Tomahawk, Wi. This used to be called Conners Lumber Company.

Doug

Gee two museums.

Dang, I’m stuck an hour and a half after work getting things nailed down for the trip and I have at least an hour and a half to go. Then I gotta pack.

I hate this last minute stuff. I just want to go. I’m hungry too.

Have a good one, Chip. By the way, if things go ‘south’ on us, who is your 2 i/c? Will you designate someone to hold the fort here?

Why does it always seem like you’re going 1,000 miles per hour before going on vacation? You always have to hurry up and relax. Happens to me every single time, without fail.

Enjoy your vacation!!!

Everyone,

If you need anything while I’m gone. Ask Crandell. IF you want to know something, ask Jarrell. He’s gotten more answers the hard way than anyone I know.

Spacemouse,

Make sure you visit the layout at the railroad and logging exhibit at Pioneer Park in Rhinelander on Business 8, it is an excellent exhibit of steam and diesel (transition era) equipment that models early Rhinelander.

If you have time, there is another HUGE layout partially finished at the Hobby Connection in Rothschild, just south of Wausau, about 60 miles south of Rhinelander.
(website: www.hobbyconnect.com)

I am sure that there are others, but these are really exceptional. The one in Rhinelander is in the basement of an old Railroad Station and there is an old Logging Locomotive and Caboose there also.

Though it isn’t a layout, there is a operational Steam train at Camp 5 in Laona, about 50 miles east of Rhinelander on Highway 8. Has lots of logging history at their Museum.
