Modern as in nowadays(i have an Acela) and its mostly Amtrak and i plan to have a few freights running too.

The trick to soldering is High Heat and good flux. If you’re not using it now you will see the difference. Regardless soldering and track allignment is a long process and sometimes painful experience.

I dont think you want to see it until most of the track is down since its pretty much a mess in my basement
