I have a 4X8 foam and plywood layout and have almost all of the roadbed glued down. I am putting flextrack to the cork with latex caulk. I just ran track up to the second turnout location and was contemplating where to put the tortoise when I discovered my error. Directly below the throwbar is a big, husky, glued in 2X4. How in the world am I gonna run an actuating wire thru that???

Ans.: put it close by and use an offset bend, can you get to anywhere on the throw rod that you can drill a hole?
Yup, a long piece of piano wire can do wonders for turnouts in “inaccessible” areas.
I’m not sure what you mean. I can get beside the 2X4 but straight up from there is not near the throwbar unless you mean to have the offset run across the top of the foam to match up with the throwbar.

You say you have foam covered benchwork…is it deep enough to bury the Tortoise between the benchwork and the surface? If such is the case,it also means that an under bench installation would need a pretty long actuating rod which in itself could become a problem. The shorter the better.
Another way is to have your Tortoise surface mounted and have it disguised under a building or else.My own solution would be to mount another section of 2X4 beside the existing one and remove some of the original one where needed. With some tooling and patience,it might be your best option.

hehe just kidding , if i had a dollar for every time i did something like that i could buy brass locos [:D]
Jacktal, I see your solution and want to thank all who replyed. I might also install a groung throw at that location as it is reasonably close to the edge of the layout.
