Took these in former L&N territory in Bardstown,New Haven and Shepherdsville. I’m curious about the CSX line that runs through Shepherdsville.I’m wondering how often trains go through it.
I’m also wondering if there are any good places to see trains frequently in Louisville or surrounding areas.
I’m going to ask the Kentucky Railway Museum and the R.J. Corman line if I can get some better photos on their property. It’s worth a shot I guess. I feel I have a good chance with KRM,not sure about Corman, though. I won’t be in their way or anything, because my camera has a 12x zoom that can compensate for distance. It’s a Canon Powershot S2 IS,btw.
Thanks for IDing them. I’d guess KRM would restore them to what they originally are. I’ll ask when I visit them at some point in the future.
I live in Bardstown, and I’ve been here all my life. I started searching for trainwatching spots. Osborn Yard sounds good, but I think it leads onto the main that runs south to where that train wreck is,so there probably isn’t going to be much traffic. I’m thinking about going to photograph the section of track that runs between Elizabethtown and Munfordsville.
The track from Elizbethtown south is part of the main line from Louisville to Nashville the same line the wreck is on. You should consider joining the KRM not only would you be able to shoot pictures but you get to “play” with the trains (like taking the toilet out of a caboose, a first for me). I have been a member for four years and it is a lot of fun, my wife can tell how good of a time I had by how dirty my son and I get.
I went to the Train Expo in Louisville on Saturday. Saw a KRM booth, asked about taking photos. They’re glad I asked,at least. The guy also said the main line from Louisville-Shepherdsville-Elizabethtown runs all the way down to Bowling Green and there’s roads that run along most of it,so I’ll have a heckuva time getting pictures.I also added some more pics to the gallery for everyone to see. Some are up in Louisville, I don’t know much about the lines. I saw a CSX train along Frankfort Avenue after leaving the Expo, missed the engines but filmed the rest of it.It’s on YouTube.
SimRacin40, really like your pictures. Especially the one of the overpass on Preston. That’s over in the Audubon Park area. Know that area, fairly well.
The tracks along Frankfort Ave. are the old L&N Eastern Kentucky and Short Line tracks. They split and the Short Line goes to Cincinatti and the EK goes to Lexington, the C&O used this line to get from Lexington to Louisville. At work now all I have time for but will post more when I get home tonight.
Someone at another forum asked me if any “hot” (as they put it) passenger trains ran through that area,I personally don’t know, but does anyone else know anything?
In pre-Amtrak times the Pan American to New Orleans and the every third day South Wind on the Chicago - Florida run were the premier trains running south from Louisville on the L&N.
This line runs for ten miles from East Louisville to HK tower at Anchorage, where the Short Line goes North to Cincinnati and the EK continues east to Lexington. The C&O also operated two passenger trains from Lexington to MN tower about a half mile west of Frankfort Ave. One of these was the Louisville section of the George Washington. These trains terminated at Central Station on the waterfront until 1963 when the C&O finally changed to Union Station. Even C&O #490 the streamlined L-1 Hudson often seen on PBS’ Tracks Ahead made it to Louisville in December 1950 just three years before she was retired and preserved at the B&O Musuem in Baltimore.
Taken yesterday at a crossing just half a mile south of Bardstown Junction. Was coming down Highway 61 from Louisville, and noticed the train parked near the crossing. Waited in a church parking lot, about 500-1000 feet(I’m not good with guessing distance) from the train, since I noticed the lights were on,and the motors were running. I heard them release the air brakes a couple times. I wasn’t sure when the train was going to move,so I went over the crossing, hoping to get a nice shot looking down the crossing at the train. When I came back over the crossing,I noticed the main headlight was on. So I got my mom to stop the car,I got out,and sure enough, the crossing gates come down, the train blows its horn and it took off.
I have more pictures, but the car antenna is noticeably visible in them. Well,I did get a few good pics, and I did learn something. Stand behind the car next time.
Thanks for the compliment. I’ll have to research the trackage around that truck plant, any good places to sit and watch trains?(without getting in trouble? Didn’t get in trouble for sitting at that particular train crossing because it’s in the middle of nowhere, hehe)
This Saturday I’m going to wait for the Dinner Train possibly at Deatsville. Might film it,might just do photos. Not sure.
